Wallace, one of the county's most prominent citizens, died at his home k in Kenansville last Saturday. At the time of his death he was clerk of court ,for Duplin county, which office he had held continuously for 20 years. The deceased, who was widely known and well liked, was about 60 years of age . fHe is survived by his widow, who be- fore marriage was Miss Ellsworth, and three children, Mrs.McGowan, of Wallace; Messrs. Fltzhugh and Wil ; liam Wallace, of Kenansville, in addi- tion to two brothers, Messrs Bland ,and Joe F. Wallace, of thi- jounty. The remains were carried to Wallace Sunday afternoon, and interment was vjnade in the family burial plot. - Preparations are being made for the .entertainment of 121 selectmen of this junty in the homes of Warsaw next Sunday night The money allowed by t&the government for their board and fjdging will be turned over to the le al branch of the county Red Cross hapten The soldiers will entrain Monday morning for Camp Jackson, this being the largest number to leave jthe county at one time. In another section of The Dispatch today there will be noticed a con densed version of the plan of the MOUNT OLIVE HAS GONE OVER QUOTA (Special to The Dispatch.) Mount Olive, May 24. Well over the top" is Mount Olive's happy rec ord in the second Red Cross .war fund. The town's quota was $2,000, but when the week was only half gone the subscriptions had already totaled $2,500, with indications point ing to a total of at least $3,000. And no small part of the credit for this Is due the colored people of the town, who have worked .nobly to the inter est of the cause and contributed very liberally. By far the heaviest draft upon the manhood of this territory for military service so far is to be made to meet the requirements of the call for men to entrain during the five-day period beginning May 25. From the town and surrounding territory something like 30 or 40 young men will respond to their country's call during that pe riod, taking practically all class A men. Hodges, of the American engi neer corps, has been awarded the fJrifc ish distinguished service order in rec ognition .of his services' during the period from March 27 to April 3. " Colonel Hodges is one of the first American officers to receive the D. S. O. From March 2 to April 3 was the period during which the British were, stemming the tide of the Ger man offensive begun on March 21. The latest published United States army list gives John N. Abernethy, who is can, didate for the democratic nomination for congress from the third district, has been holding the job of solicitor for the fifth judicial district. He did not consider it good form for a man to hold to one office while running or another and so Mr. Abernethy has re signed as solicitor, banking all on winning the nomination. His princi pal opponent Congressman Hood ha v. ing been disposed of ,by bad health Col. W. T:, Dortch, of Goldsboro, is United States marshal for the eastern district, and The Wilmington Dis-r patch is calling upon him to follow the example -of Abernethy. It is a. question if the law applies to candi dates for nomination.
