Pfflgr I CHAPTER LVIII. Jane is Offered a Bribe. A few days after the old bookkeeper had talked with Jane he came home all excitement. "That old geezer asked me to kiss him today," she said. "He didn't at tempt to kiss me, but kept on asking if I 'wouldn't give him a kiss?' I talked to him like a Dutch uncle. J. guess I have shut him up for good. If I haven't I guess I'll have to get out." She hadn't "shut him up." A day or two afterward he tried to coax her again to kiss him; then he offered her a bribe. He would raise her pay to $18 a week at once if she would. Jane left immediately not waiting to finish the day. She went back to the bureau and gave the women the true reason for leaving. The woman in charge of the bureau immediately called up an other girl who had left the same place, no reason, and asked why she left. She confessed to the same cause as made Jane leave. That man was put on tna bureau's blacklist, but Jane's exper ience with him was not yet over. The bureau found her another posi tion the very next day. She was wait ing for us when we got home anxious to tell us all about it. More Than One Entrance and Name. "You never heard anything like it, girls!" she exclaimed. "I took the card from the bureau. The office was in the same building with that old duf fer's office that I had just left. You could have knocked me down with a feather when I saw him. He was a little surprised to see me, too. He had given another name, and used another entrance to his office.- I nev er had seen that door open, and did not suppose he ever used it. I wish you could have seen his face when I said I was going to tell them at the bu reau of this trick. He'll have to move as well as changing his name be fore he gets another girl from that of fice. That nice woman who runs it was awfully indignant. Yet she said it was a good thing it happened to a sensible girl who couldn't be fooled by his promise of a large salary. She told her assistant never to send another girl to that building without investi gating." Jane was only out altogether about ten days when she was sent to a 'fine position with reliable people who gave her $18 to start, with a chance to im prove herself both as to position and salary if she tried. I hate to tell these things. I wish all employers were honest, all girls good. But if one is to tell things as they are they cannot gloss over either wicked ness or incompetency. But I beW that the majority of emplovers gentlemen, real business men vk! want their work well done. But th! there are such men is a certain fa and girls cannot be on their guard -f kept in ignorance. Another thine- ft girls would stand together and rK to work for such men, they soon will be men of the past because thev be unable to get anyone to do" their work properly and be subjected to h suit at the same time. Talk of Other Girls. Jane amused us by telling us of ths other things she saw and heard at tho typewriting bureau. She said that the dirtier, the more unkemt and un. combed a girl was the more she kick ed about the kind of an office to which she was sent. - "They seem to think thev must work in an office where there" i3 m4. hogany furniture and Turkish rugs she told us, "and I'll bet by their look! their own homes are like pig penj One of the commonest looking girls in the place came back from where thev had sent her and refused to take the place. When they asked her uhy she didn't stay she said: 'I ain't going to work in no office where they has bare floors and oak desks. My" chum works' in a dandy place. They have glass tops on all the mahogany desks lovely rugs on the floor, and every thing like a parlor, I want a place like that.' She never seem to think that she would look out of place in an of fice like that." Tell us some more, I urged. "I was awfully sorry for one wo man," Jane went on. She was tender hearted. "This woman was about 40 years old. She said no one wanted her because she was too old. She was awfully bitter, poor thing. I got to talking with her. She said that just as soon as an office found out she was not young they -wouldn't even talk to her. It scared me, girls, honest it did. We'll have to make hay while the sun shines in this business. I always had an idea that the more experience a girl had the more she was worth, but I guess I'm wrong. I wonder if thev can't keep up the pace, the long hours and the speed. I wish I knew.' I also wished -1- knew. Jane's talk had made me very thoughtful. I re membered the woman in the office where I worked who, because she was older and had been there longer, ex pected the place given me. I decided that after a certain age the steno grapher must either go backward or She must strike out for herself if she didn't marry. Tomorrow BETTY MAKES A CON FESSION.
