WHAT A RICHMOND PAPER SAYS ABOUT FREIGHT RATES When a paper in the town that is benefitted as Richmond has been and is on account of freight rates which gives that place a manifest advant ge over the entire state enabling it to control a large share of the whole sale business coming into North Carolina, speaks out in the follow ing terms it is about time for the people of North Carolina to wake up and do something. We qaote from the Merchant's Journal of Richmond: "The rates imposed on interstate shipments to and from North Caro lina are abominably iniquitious, to tally unjust, glaring discriminating and have been attained by the rule of avarice, . exacted by the greed or the necesstlies of a powerful mon opoly that subjected the shippers to all the hardships and oppressions that they could impose.. North Car olina is one of the greatest of the Southern States. It has been denied the full growth of its natural re sources and an expansion of the en ergies of her splendid citizenship by these devilish extortions imposed by the railways. Is it not time that there discriminations which have been maintained in spite of law and in spite of justice should be remov ed? All speed and power to those who are fighting this fight. It ought not to be a group of men, but every citizen should be aroused to help in removing the heavy shackles that liave prevented the natural growth of the Old North State." Funeral of Mrs. Taylor. The funeral of Mrs. Will Taylor was conducted from her late resi dence on Herring avenue at four o'clock yesterday afternoon by Rev. I. N. Mercer. Te followife1 pall bearers officiated-; Messrs. L. SMITH, Health Officer. - FEDERALi COURT TODAY The federal court in session here with Judge H. G. Connor presiding is making the penalties heavy on '.he distillers.
