Bertie Ledger-Advance Wednesday, February 3, 2016 Faith Identity in Christ To all the saints in Christ Jesus...grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.- Phi- lippians 1:1 After watching the 1980 movie Superman II as a young kid, I actu ally believed that I was Superman. “Faster than a speed ing bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound! Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman!” I stood on the edge of the bathtub, raised my arms up in the air and jumped off. Maybe I just assumed that I would fly straight through the ceiling and roof, because I didn’t even bother to brace for impact. Reality quickly set in when my mouth hit the sink and I heard pieces of my front teeth slid ing down the drain. Who you believe you are profoundly affects what you do and how you live. How do you identify yourself in Christ - are Pastor Charlie Lanier you a sirmer or a saint? It takes little effort to convince yourself and others that you are a sinner. It’s easy to point out your faults, shortcom ings, struggles, and ad dictions. However, try telling members of your fam ily or a group of your coworkers that you are a saint. It’s unlikely that they will let you get away with such a bold state ment. As you look at the sin in your life, you may have difficulty believ ing it yourself. Christ, there is a change in your identity. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthi ans 5:17) You may continue to fall into sin as a believ er, but you are no lon ger identified by your sin. You are no longer an enemy of God storing up wrath on the day of judgment. You are no longer a gossip, a liar, an adulterer, or a killer. You are now identified as being “in Christ.” Jesus switched plac es with us. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righ teousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). He became sin for you so that you take on his identity. You are a new cre ation. As difficult as it may be for you to say or for others to hear, in Christ, you are a saint. It is not a statement of vanity or arrogance, but a statement of faith. By faith, you are holy and blameless because he is holy and blame less. As you identify as a sirmer, your behavior will match your belief. You sin because you are a sirmer. There is fear of judgment, of smite, of enmity. There is a reluctance to enter into the pres ence of God. There is guilt and hesitation to approach him in prayer. As you identify cis a saint, your behavior will begin to match that of your Savior. You love because you have been loved, you forgive because, you have been forgiven. There is confidence to approach the throne of grace, knowing that there is now no con demnation for those who are in Christ Je- TTie Rev.
