Feb. 20 Historic Hope Foundation will host the fes tival of soups from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, on Sat urday, Feb. 20 at the Roanoke-Chowan Visitor Center at Historic Hope. Tickets are $16 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. The price includes two bowls of soup, bread, des sert, and iced tea or water. This event is eat in or carry out. The 23rd annual African American History Celebration will be held a Historic Hope Foun dation on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The title of this year’s event is “Bertie Coimty African Americans in the 36th Infantry Colored Troops in the Civil War”. The featured speaker is Dr. James Bryant, who will talk about the transition of members of the troops from slavery to freedom with the Union army as an agent for social change. Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the program at 10:00 a.m. There is no charge for the event. The Aulander Ruritan Club’s annual Bruns wick stew sale will be held on Saturday Feb. 20 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Aulander Fire Department. Quarts are $7 each and will be available for pick-up. Proceeds benefit the many service projects the club does through out the year. Richardson III is Pastor. Feb. 23 The February Mature Patrons’ Program at Sallie Harrell Jenkins Memorial Library in Aulander will feature Windsor Fire Chief Billy Smithwick as speaker. The program, to be held at the library, located at 302 Broad Street, will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Smith- wick’s program, titled “The Next Chapter in the Search for the Lost Colony,” will begin with a history lesson that brings the colonists from England to present-day Dare County. He will then explore the possibility that at least the remnant of the original settlers migrated inland to present-day Bertie County. A Dutch- treat lunch will follow.
