WINDSOR - Filing for
those wishing to serve
on the Bertie CoTinty
Board of Education will
close at 12 noon on Fri
day.
The same is true for
a position on the Board
of Bertie County Soil
and Water Supervisors.
Thus far only the
three incumbents for
those seats have filed
for election.
Bobby Occena has
filed to seek a second
term representing Dis
trict 1 on the Bertie
County Board of Edu
cation.
Current board chair
Tarsha Bush-Dudley
has also filed for a sec
ond term representing
District 5.
The only person to
file for Soil and Water
Conservation Supervi
sor is incumbent John
M. Griffin.
Those wishing to seek
office on either board
will have until 12 noon
on Friday to file at the
Bertie County Board of
Elections office on Wat
son Street.

WINDSOR - Operating with no
headlights got a wanted man
arrested here June 13.
Windsor Police Chief Todd
Lane said officers arrested
James Earl Shepard Jr., 47, of
122 Perry St. in Williamston
on drug charges, and learned
he was wanted in neighboring
Martin County.
Windsor Police Officer
A.J. Lanier was patrolling on
South King St. when he en
countered a vehicle operating
without headlights, and initi
ated a traffic stop. The driver
of the vehicle identified
later as Shepard - stopped at
the intersection of Water and
Queen streets.
After stopping Shepard,
Lanier learned the car the
suspect was driving had an
expired registration, and
Shepard was not in posses
sion of his driver’s license.
Windsor Police Officer
Frank Ratzlaff arrived to as
sist, and noticed a bag of
marijuana hanging out of the

defendant’s pocket as they
talked. He placed Shepard
under arrest, and conducted
a search of the vehicle which
netted four additional individ
ually wrapped bags of mari
juana.
Upon identifying the sus
pect, Lanier discovered Shep-

Cooking camp a recipe for success

WINDSOR - Healthy cooking
at a young age.
The Bertie County 4-H
hosted a five-day youth camp
for children 5 to 8 years old.
Eighteen children participat
ed in the program.
Kathy Copeland and Tiera
Beale taught the youth a nutri
tion lesson, cooked a healthy
meal and completed 30 min
utes to one hour of physical
activity each day.
The campers also visited
Simply Natural Creamery in
T^den in celebration of Na
tional Dairy Month. The week
ended with an hour and a half
of swimming at the Vidant

Sage Festival planned July 4

WINDSOR - The fourth
annual Sage Festival
will be held Friday, July
8 in downtown Wind
sor.
The event was origi
nally scheduled in May,
but had to be moved due
to inclement weather.
It will kick off at
4 p.m. and continue
through 10 p.m.
“We are excited about
our fourth annual Sage
Festival,” said Windsor/
Bertie County Cham
ber of Commerce Ex
ecutive Director Lewis
Hoggard. “It is an event
