Bertie jobless rate lowest in region By Thadd White Bertie Ledger-Advance BCSO Better than those around. Not as good as most of the state. That’s where Bertie County finds itself following the re cent release of the Jime un employment rate. Bertie County’s unemploy ment rate crept up to 6.6 per cent, rising slightly from the 6.2 percent in May. The rate, however, was down consider ably frohi that of June 2015 when it was 7.5 percent. Bertie County’s rate was equal to that of neighbor ing Chowan, but better than any of the other surrounding counties. Hertford County was the closest at 6.7 percent, fol lowed by Martin County at 7.1 percent and Northampton County at 7.3 percent. Statewide, North Carolina’s imemployment rate was 5.2 percent in Jime (xma^justed), up from 4.8 in May, but 0.9 percent lower than the state’s overall rate a year ago. Sheriff John Holley introduced four new officers to the Bertie Coimty Commissioners at Mondays meeting. These officers join ing Bertie County Sher iffs Department will help ease the shortage of deputies the depart ment has faced over the past six months. Holley also gave an update on the progress of construction at the new facility, which will house the Bertie Coun ty Sheriff’s Department, communications and other depcutments. The facility is the old Bertie County Public School’s central office building on County Farm Road. “My office is almost completely moved. Let's Play! New playground equipment added to complex By Leslie Beachboard Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Fun for all. Bertie County Recreation Complex, located at 1538 South King St, held its ribbon cutting ceremony for the county’s new playground last week. The playground was a joint project of the Bertie County Commissioners, Bertie County Recreation Department and Trillium Health care Resources. ’Trillium provided the fund ing. The playground includes a Liberty Swing, which is accessible while in a wheelchair, an Oodle swing, a Merry-Go-All, a four-seater seesaw, and other playground equipment for adults and children with mobility challenges. Spooktacular makes plans to kick off By Thadd White Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - It’s time to start planning. The seventh annual Bertie Spooktacular 5K and 1-mile run/walk is set for Saturday, Oct. 29 on York Street in Wind sor. 'The Spooktacular is presented by Perdue, and is the single fund raiser each year for the Good Shepherd Food Pantry. Last year, the event raised more than $10,000, all of which was used to buy food for needy families in Bertie County. The event features a 5K run through the streets of Windsor, tak ing in all of the historic sites of the town, and a 1-mile run/walk that has come to be a family favorite. Not only are racers needed for the event, but sponsors are as well.
