The effects of the Colonial Gas Line leaks have begim to be felt here in Bertie County. Local stores started running out of gas Sunday evening. Stores that still had gas had long lines of cars waiting to fill up. By Sunday night, most gas stations in the town of Windsor had empty tanks and bags over their pumps, signi fying they were out of fuel. Early Monday moming, a truck was delivering a load of fuel to Duck Thru Food Store next to Burger King and to the Duck Thru Food Store next to the Bertie County ABC Store. As of Tuesday afternoon. Speedway in Windsor was still out of gas and they are not sure when they will re ceive their next delivery. The gas shortage in Bertie County extends from a leak in a main gasoline pipeline in Shelby County, Ala. The leak spilled 6,000 gal lons of gas and Colonial Gas Lines was required to shut down the pipeline to find the leak. “It is a concern. We have limited day-to- day operations. We have put staging policies on hold in case we have a major catas trophe,” said Bertie County Emergency Services Director Mitch Cooper. Bertie Coimty’s imem- ployment rate dipped in July. According to numbers released by the N.C. De partment of Commerce, the county’s rate de creased slightly to 6.5 percent for the month of July. The rate was down 0.1 percent from Jvme, when it was 6.6 percent, but is significantly down from the 7.7 recorded in July 2015. TVo of the four neigh boring counties were lower than Bertie for the month of July, while the others were signifi cantly higher. Chowan County’s rate dropped to 6.3 percent while Hertford CoTmty dipped to 6.4 percent. Martin County’s un employment rate was 7.1 percent for July while Northampton’s was 7.2 percent. Food Lion gives food pantry grant By Leslie Beachboard Enterprise & Weekly Herald WINDSOR - A local food pan try has received major Food Lion grant. The Albemarle Food Bank suggested to the Good Shep herd Food Pantry of Bertie County that it should apply for a grant issued by Food lion Feeds: “The Great Pan try Makeover.” The Good Shepherd Food Pantry of Bertie County was approved for a $4,700 grant which of part was used to purchase two freezers for the storage of meats, breads and desserts. The other part of the grant was used to make repairs to the building on King Street that houses the food pantry. The requests for repairs listed replacing windows, painting, and making ceiling repairs left from water damage. Any remaining money left after the purchase of the freezers and repairs would be used to purchase food for the pantry. Everything was just so dry,” said Bertie County Cooperative Extension Director Billy Barrow. Bertie County’s pea nuts, cotton and soy beans were extremely dry. The plants’ growth had stalled due to the dry conditions. The rain helped the plants get back on track and con tinue to grow. According to the North Carofina State Highway Patrol, at ap proximately 8:44 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, Rickey McCoy Dicker- son, 60, of Ahoskie was traveling alone north on U.S. 13 about five miles south of Powells ville. The Toyota pickup tmck operated by Dickerson traveled to the right, struck a ditch and collided with a tree. The truck overturned and caught fire. The tmck came to rest on its side. Dickerson was pro nounced dead at the Dickerson was wear ing a seatbelt. It is unknown at this time whether dmgs or alcohol was a factor, according to the North Carolina State High way Patrol.
