The Bertie County Commissioners met Monday afternoon and discussed if there would be change to the position of Com mission Chairman and Vice Chairman at their annual organizational meeting. Current Bertie County Commission Chairman John Trent and Vice Chairman Ernestine Ba- zemore took their posi tion in December of last year. As the discussion began, Bertie County Commissioner Tammy Lee recommended the current seats remain the same. “1 believe the seats should remain the same due to the relations with FEMA and the county’s flood damage and also due to the ongoing trou bles with Bertie County Schools,” said Lee. Christmas in Roxobel BY THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance ROXOBEL - A new event brought out a familiar face here Saturday. The town of Roxobel host ed its inaugural Celebration of Christmas Saturday eve ning, and welcomed Jolly Old St. Nick himself as hundreds gathered to celebrate the season. Roxobel Mayor Alvin Sim mons welcomed those in at tendance, and invited them to celebrate Christmas and to enjoy the festivities. “We welcome you here,” he said. “We look forward to to night’s celebration, but we al ways remember Jesus is the reason for the season.” The mayor also reminded citizens to show love for one another as they celebrated the Christmas season. Lesley Parker then lit the ir tall Christmas tree that will serve as the centerpiece for Roxobel’s celebration. See ROXOBEL, A5 Lesley Parker lights the Christmas tree in Roxobel Saturday evening. drugs found Windsor officer assaulted BY THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - A Windsor man is in jail on mul tiple assault and drug charges following an in cident Dec. 2. Windsor Police Chief Todd Lane said his offi cers were dispatched to Pitt Street Friday night after a citizen reported a person at their resi dence who had a gun and refused to leave. When officers arrived, the suspect had left the scene, but not before al legedly assaulting and threatening the victim. The victim, however, was able to identify and describe the suspect to officers. Windsor Police Of ficer Jason Thomas lo cated the suspect on South Queen Street, and initiated a traffic stop to detain the suspect ve hicle. Thomas had the sus pect remove himself from the vehicle and began a search. AULANDER - The annual Christ mas celebration is coming to Aulander. Saturday will see a the town celebrate its annual Christmas parade, hold a Christmas con cert and have a Christmas Tree Lighting. “We welcome everyone to come and spend Saturday af ternoon in our town,” Aulander Mayor Larry Drew said. “It will be a wonderful day of celebra tion and fellowship.” The annual Christmas parade is slated to begin at 2 p.m. The parade will begin at Rice Avenue and continue down Main Street until taking a left at Commerce Street. It will then continue past the railroad track, where it will end. Following the parade, Richard Simmons will provide a Christ mas concert in the Aulander Community Building.
