BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE

The fabric of Bertie County since / 832
Continued
Both
for additional areas in
Bertie County.
In order to better
serve the Bertie Coun
ty citizens, the Bertie
County Commission
ers are requesting the
North Carolina Board
of Community Colleges
blur the districting lines
across the county.
This will open the en
tire county to services
from both colleges.
Roanoke Chowan
Community College has
partnered with Bertie
County in recent years
to establish a high
school CADET program
for Emergency Medi
cal Technician training
(EMT) as a feeder pro
gram to provide a path
way to employment.
However, under the
limitations of the cur
rent service area rules,
Roanoke Chowan Com
munity College cannot
offer adult EMT classes
at the high school be
cause Martin Commu
nity College controls
this territory.
Bertie High School
and the North Carolina
Department of Public
Safety have partnered
with Roanoke Chowan
Community College to
establish a Criminal
Justice CADET pro
gram, also with the fo
cus on an emplo3mient
pathway for local jobs
at the state prison in
Windsor.
Again, The State
Community College
system’s interschool
agreement’s protocol
has prevented Roanoke
Chowan Community
College’s access to The
Bertie Correctional In
stitute based in Wind
sor. This jail, based in
Windsor, has an inmate
capacity of 1,500.
With the districting
lines gone, both colleg
es would have equal ac
cess to all the facilities.
Cherry’s concern was
that the districting lines
were only being opened
to Roanoke Chowan
Community College for
entry into his area, but
were not opened for
Martin Community Col
lege.
“I don’t want this to
turn my three-room
school into a two-room
school,” said Cherry.
According to Board
Chairman John Trent,
The commission
is requesting the ex
pansion of curriculum
and adult basic educa
tion services from both
community colleges
without restriction.
This change will benefit
both colleges serving
the area.

Busy 2017 planned at Chamber
Happy New Year!
The year starts with snow
and ice keeping everyone in
side. It is amazing how quickly
cabin fever can strike. Just go
ing to the local convenience
store becomes exciting. As we
unthaw and return to a more
normal schedule let’s look and
see what is scheduled for 2017.
The calendar is peppered
with events all year.
In January, we have our annu
al meeting including the state
of the chamber address. Our
Black History Celebration dom
inates February. We honor our
farmers with an appreciation
dinner in March.
The Lost Colony Festival
comes in April. Finding out
about the original colonists
and their movement to Bertie
County just shows what a spe
cial place we have.
Our signature event of the
year is the Sage Festival which
happens the weekend after Me
morial Day. The 30,000 acres of
clary sage being grown in our
area greatly impacts our econo
my. Avoca not only uses our lo
cal farmers, but they also have
Chamber Chatter
A..
Lewis Hoggard
over one hundred employees
at their site in Merry Hill. This
year will mark our fifth annual
Sage Festival, which Will be
filled with music, food and fun.
On the heels of the Sage Fes
tival is the Pound the Sound
Triathlon. Pound the Sound
brings athletes to our com
munity and showcases Scotch
Hall Preserve. Scotch Hall Pre
serve is really the crown jewel
of the tourist attractions in
Bertie County. Golf, food, wa
ter sports, swimming there is
plenty to do overlooking the
Albemarle Sound.
We light up the sky on July 3rd
with our Freedom Fireworks at
the Roanoke Cashie River Cen
ter. The Fall brings the Peanut
Festival, Bertie Spooktacular 5k
and the return of Blues, Brews
and BBQ. Our First Respond
ers Dinner and our carriage
rides all lead to another peanut
drop. Just in case you missed
it, we dropped a peanut behind
Town Hall to end 2016 and will
be doing the same in 2017.
The aforementioned events,
dinners and festivals are just
what we have planned for the
year. There will be more. We
look forward to many ribbon
cuttings, business after hours,
lunch ‘n learns to come this
year including the opening of
the Windsor Train Museurn.
The Chinese recognize 2017 as
the year of the Rooster. Let’s
make this year something to
crow about!
