JANUARY 2017 BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE Sports The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Bethel sweeps Gramercy in quadrupleheader ASKEWVILLE - Four games, four victories. The varsity and junior varsity basketball teams from Bethel Assem bly Christian Academy pulled off a quadruple- header sweep Friday over Gramercy. The BACA boys erased a four-point deficit by outscoring the Warriors 22-8 in the fourth quar ter to win 53-43 in the final game. Caleb Simmons poured in 25 points to lead Bethel (6-5 over all). Josh Bunch added 13 points, while Paul Northcott chipped in nine points. Daniel Castello led the Eagles on the boards by pulling down 10 re bounds and added a pair of blocks. Northcott and Mason Dunlow grabbed eight rebounds each. In the varsity girls contest. Bethel pulled away in the fourth quar ter to claim a 33-24 vic tory, improving to 6-2 overall. The Eagles led 20-18 after three quarters and then outscored Gramer cy 13-6 in the final ses sion. Sarah Conner finished with 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting. Makayla Ball added seven points, while Jen na Dunlow chipped in six points. Jamie Burkett con trolled the boards for the Eagles with 10 re bounds. Dunlow pulled down nine rebounds. Ball and Haley North cott contributed five and four rebounds, re spectively. BACA’s junior varsity boys remained unbeat en (11-0) with a 49-31 triumph in the second game of the day. The Eagles outscored the Warriors in every quarter -13-8 in the first, 9-5 in the second, 12-11 in the third and 15-7 in the fourth. Kyle Cullipher led a balanced Bethel of fensive attack with 14 points. Four others add ed eight points each: Mason Dunlow, Mason Askew, Lucas Doughtie and Brandon Ball. Dunlow, Doughtie and Adam Hoggcird grabbed seven rebounds each, while Ball had six boards and Cullipher five. Hoggard and Dup- low each blocked three shots to spark the Beth el defense, while Dough tie added two blocks. Cullipher (four). Ball (three) and Askew (three) combined for 10 of the Eagles’ 11 steals. The BACA junior var sity girls (6-5) started the day with a 30-12 win over Gramercy. The Eagles held just a 9-8 lead at halftime but rolled in the sec ond half, outscoring the Warriors 21-4. Haley Northcott and Sarah Conner led BACA with 10 points each, while Kayley Minton chipped in six points. Northcott (13) and Sheree Harrell (eight) combined for more than half of the Eagles’ rebounding total. Northcott and Harrell each added five steals to help the defense, while Minton and Con ner provided four and three, respectively. BHS boys fall AHOSKIE - Three play ers in double figures, but no victory. Bertie High School’s varsity boys basketball team suffered an 85-65 loss to Northeastern Coastal 2A Conference rival Hertford County on Friday. The Falcons dropped to 2-3 in the conference and 3-11 overall under first-year head coach Derrick Bond. Bertie was able to stay with Hertford County in the first period and trailed by just one (15- 14) after eight minutes. The Bears began to pull away, outscoring the Falcons 19-13 in the second quarter and 25- 16 in the third for a 59- 43 lead. A 26-22 edge in the final session sealed the win. Quatravis Riddick poured in 24 points on 9 of 18 shooting to lead Bertie. Erick Speight and Al- den Cottle provided 14 points each for the Fal cons, who shot 47 per cent (25 of 63) from the field. Speight hauled in 10 rebounds for Ber tie, while Speight and Jaqwan Baylor managed six each. Cottle and Rid dick contributed thee steals apiece. On Thursday, Bertie went outside of confer ence play and suffered a 69-45 loss at home to J.H. Rose. The Rampants used edges in the first quarter (20-8) and fourth period (21-9) to establish their margin of victory. The Falcons played them even in the second and third quarters. Bertie plays Currituck at home Friday. The Fal cons play at Riverside on Saturday. Bertie’s Deontre Bryant (No. County. Senior forward Jordan Payne leads the squad in scoring with 14.5 points and outing and 11.0 re bounds a game. The CU men’s program is currently 10-4 over all and 4-2 in league play. The Hawks are paced by senior forward Jeremy Smith who is averag ing 15.7 points game and 8.6 rebounds an out ing.
