Obituaries
Coy Lindsey Brown
KELFORD, NC-Coy Lindsey Brown, age 98,
passed away peacefully on January 18, 2017 at his
residence. Coy was preceded in death by his par
ents, one sister, Helen Pearce, and one brother, JB
Brown.
Mr. Brown was bom on June 28, 1918 to Zebe-
dee and Minnie Brown in Powellsville, NC. He was
as a hardworking dedicated father that was always
there for his family. Coy epjoyed times spent with
lus wife while training and showing horses. He
spent most of his life farming and, was a peanut
broker for many years as well. Coy also eryoyed
taking a fishing trip every chance he could. He was
a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grand
father, and brother. He will be deeply missed by all
that knew him.
Coy is survived by his loving wife Judy, one son.

daughters, Sally Brown MuU and husband Robert
of Wiaterville, NC, and Anne Brown BeU of Ard
more, OK; one sister. Pansy B. Storey of Murfrees
boro, NC; and two brothers, Lonnie Brown and
wife Becky, and Howard Brown and wife Alice,
both of Powellsville, NC, four grandchildren; Ste
phen Cooper, Laura Parker, George BeU, and Brian
BeU; two great grandchUdren; Cody and GabrieUe
BeU; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life graveside service wLU be
held on January 21, 2017, at 3:00 PM, at the Roxo-
bel-KeUord Cemetery, Roxobel, NC, with the Rev.
H C Boschen, officiating.

Bertie County Schools will host Parent’s Night from 5 p.m.
until 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Bertie Central Services
Complex. The focus is to provide information to aide stu
dents in achieving their maximum potential educationally and/
or behaviorally. For more information contact Bertie County

Martin Community College Bertie Campus will host a Ca
reer Pathways in Healthcare class on Monday, Tuesday and
Thursdays beginning Jan. 26 and ending Feb.2. The class
will be held from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The class introduces
students to health care classes in several areas of study. The
fee is $70, but this may be waived for qualifying students.

Lawrence Academy will host an event with Parents for Edu
cational in Freedom North Carolina (PEFNC) beginning at
6:30 a.m. Thursday, January 26. The event is for parents,

arship Program and Children with Disabilities Grant. Law

Notice is Hereby Given to the public and the news media
that the Bertie County Board of Education will hold a special
called meeting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the Cen
tral Office Complex, 715 US 13 N, Windsor. This special •
meeting has been called to discuss the Feb. 7,2017 agenda
items, budget and personnel issues.
Martin Community College will host a class titled “How to
Find Your Customers” Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 6 p.m. until 8
p.m. at the Martin County campus. There is no charge for

Martin Community College Bertie Campus will host a new
class titled “Intro to Human Service” on Tuesdays and
Thursday nights, beginning Feb. 6 and ending March 23.
The classes will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. The
course is an exploration of the skills and strategies needed
to be income maintenance worker within Division of Social
Services agencies. The fee is $125 but may be waived for

Martin Community College will host a “EMT Basic Hybrid
Course (classroom and online instructiorl) on Tuesday and

scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. Monday Feb. 6 In the Commis
sioners room at the Bertie County Courthouse on Dundee
Street.

Notice is hereby given to the public and the news media that
the Bertie County Board of Education will hold Its regularly
scheduled meeting beginning with closed session at 5:30
p.m. Tuesday Feb. 7 at the Central Office Complex, 715 U.S.
13 N, Windsor. The open session portion of the meeting will
begin at 6:30 p.m.
Martin Community College’s next Basic Law Enforcement
Training (BLET) program has been rescheduled to begin on
Feb. 7. Classes are conducted from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., Mon-.
day through Friday, and every other weekend during the day.
Successful completers may then sit for the state’s BLET State
Comprehensive Examination. Those interested in applying
must complete a packet of information and forms no later than
Feb. 6. The application packets may be downloaded from the
MCC website or obtained in person or by mail from Wayland

The town of Powellsville Commissioners will hold their

Historic Hope Foundation presents the Ives Lecture: “Fur
niture of the Roanoke River Basin” from 10 a.m. until 3

Center at Historic Hope Plantation. The lecture will focus
on Roanoke River Valley furniture in the Hope mansion and

The Bertie County Arts Council will celebrate its grand re
opening from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12. The
theme will be Celebrate “The Arts” in Bertie. Chris Elliott will
