And she would be pleased beyond mea sure that a local his toric preservation lec ture series bearing her name soon will host furniture and antiques expert Robert Leath, chief museum decora tive arts curator from Winston-Salem’s Mu seum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MES- DA). Leath will appear at Windsor’s historic Hope Plantation on Saturday, Feb 11 begin ning at 10 a.m. to speak about Furniture of the Roanoke River Basin. Leath will glean much of his subject matter from a viewing of fur niture collected and displayed in the 1803 Hope Mansion and the 1763 King-Bazemore House located on the Hope grounds. He will enhance his lecture by drawing ma terial from the ground breaking 1988 book by John Bivins titled The Furniture of Coastal North Carolina, 1700- 1820. Now 30 years follow ing publication of the Bivins book, Leath is excited about sharing new information and discoveries regarding some well-known re gional furniture mak ers. It is particularly note worthy that the here tofore mysteriously shrouded “WH” cabi netmaker from Bertie County has been iden tified as William Seay. Leath also will disclose new information about Edenton cabinetmaker Samuel Black whose ca reer and work actually spanned both sides of the Chowan River. Attendees will be in vited to view a special exhibition of furniture made by local area Af rican-American crafts men and artisans. Attendees at Satur day’s lecture are invit ed to assemble in the Roanoke Chowan Heri tage Center at 10:00 a.m. Curator Leath’s pre sentation will begin at 10:30 a.m., and will end at 12 noon. Lunch will be served from noon until 12:45 p.m. Curator Leath will lead a walkthrough of the Hope Mansion from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Tuition for the entire event, including lunch, will be $40 per person. Attendees may register in advance by phoning Hope at 252-794-3140 ii r- Z*: 1/ ^ ^ SB Is Landowners can apply for tree planting funds BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Landown ers in 93 North Carolina counties whose timber- lands were damaged by Hurricane Matthew or wildfires last year may apply for state funds to help with the tree planting costs. The Disaster Recov ery Act of 2016 includ ed $1 million for the Timber Restoration Fund administered by the N.C. Forest Service. “Funding for the pro gram is available now. and landowners are encouraged to apply early. This is a one-time time-limited fund de signed to help landown ers who have shovel- ready projects that can be completed by April 30, 2018,” said North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. To be eligible for the program, projects must be between five and 100 acres, and the land- owner must be ready to implement site prepa ration and tree planting practices. All North Carolina counties are eligible for the program except Al amance, Durham, Gran ville, Orange, Person, Vance and Warren. Interested landown ers should contact their county ranger’s office to apply. Gates County Health Department has night clinic on the 1st and 3rd Thursday nights from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Bertie Coun ty Health Department has night clinic on 2nd and 4th Mondays until 7:00 pm. Bertie County Health Department, partnering with Albe marle Regional Health Services, announces its clinic schedule. Clinics are held at Bertie Coun ty Health Department - 102 Rhodes Avenue, Windsor, (794-5322). Hours at the Bertie County Health Depart ment are from 8:00 am 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Bertie County Health Depart ment has extended hours on second and fourth Monday eve nings until 7:00 pm. There is a fee, based on income, for most clinics.
