Students were di vided into groups and worked together to go through a step-by-step process of extracting DNA. Among those attend ing the program was Bertie County Board of Education member Jo Davis Johnson. She called the program “engaging.” “On Feb. 15, Mrs. Jean Boiler invited me to participate in a hands-on experience in science,” Johnson said. “Since the chil dren could not travel to Raleigh, the Mu seum of Natural Sci ences came to them. It was amazing. “We all participated in ‘exploring DNA.’ The students experienced the process of extract- ' ing wheat germ,” she added. “All students were collaborating and engaged about learning.” Johnson expressed her appreciation to Boiler, fifth grade teacher Shelia Parker and Aulander Princi pal Clara Lee for “pro viding engaging learn ing opportunities for our children.” Jalea Cade pours chemicals together during the DNA extraction experiment last week at Aulander Elementary STEM School. Ricky graduated from John A. Holmes and holds a BS in Horticulture from NC State. He is employed by Eastern Turf Maintenance in Raleigh, NC. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Jack CuUipher of Columbiaj SC and Mr. Webster Daniels and the late Dorothy Daniels of Colerain, NC. Pa ternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Larry Layden, Sr. of Edenton, NC and the late Mr. and Mrs. Gar land Toppin of Edenton, NC. The couple plan to reside in Clayton, NC after a honeymoon to Aruba.
