BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE FEBRUARY22,20171 B3 The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Sports Bertie From B1 seed from the NEC, gave Bertie fits in the first half, despite trailing big early. Both teams had trouble hitting shots against the other’s zone defense in the first quarter. However, Lady Falcon Nyasia Barnes - who scored seven points in the stanza on a pair of three-pointers and a free throw - gave Bertie a 12-3 lead. Carlisa Spivey and Akia Jordan also had buckets in the quarter. Pasquotank (14-9 overall) chipped away at the lead in the second quarter, pulling within a point on two free throws before a free throw by Jomiya Early gave Bertie a 21- 19 lead at halftime. The Panthers needed just 16 seconds in the third quarter to tie the score at 21, but back-to-back triples by Spivey and Early and a bucket from Autum Morings gave the Falcons the lead back, 29-21. Pasquotank ended that run with a basket, but Bertie finished the third quarter on an 11-2 run and the defense held the Panthers to two points in the final 3:26. Barnes started the streak with a basket at 4:14, then Jordan converted a pass from Spivey to make it 33-23, prompting a Pas quotank timeout at 3:11. That did little to quell the Falcons’ mo mentum. Early scored on a fast-break assist from Spivey, Akyia King added two free throws and then converted an old-fashioned three- point play to give the top seed control. The Panthers could only get the deficit down to 14 points, which happened four times in the final session. Early (three-pointer), Morings (basket). King (three straight buckets), Morings again (basket) and Spivey (bucket underneath) helped the Falcons pull away for the cham pionship. King led Bertie with 16 points while Barnes added 13. Early, Spivey and Morings chipped in nine, eight and seven points, re spectively. The Falcons held a 34-23 edge in rebound ing, as Morings grabbed 11, Spivey had eight and King provided seven. Bertie had advanced to the championship game with a 49-21 win over No. 4 seed John A. Holmes (Edenton) in the semifinals.
