Monday evening the Roxobel Revitalization Committee met with members of the Roxo bel Board of Commis sioners and Roxobel Fire Department along with community lead ers to iron out plans for the festival, which is slated for April 1. Plans made for the festival include the Farmer’s 5K Fun Run, children’s games and musical entertainment. The inaugural festi val is being planned to draw people to the northern Bertie County town, according to or ganizers. The event will kick off at 11 a.m. with a parade planned for 11:30 a.m. Immediately following the parade. Farmer’s 5K will start. The event will offer a prize for the male and female who are best dressed as farmers. Those wishing to sign up or who want learn more about the Farm er’s 5K should contact the Windsor/Bertie County Chamber of Commerce, who tradi tionally organizes such events for local festi vals, at 252-794-4277. A large crowd attend ed the Vidant Bertie Hospital Heart Truth Social on Feb. 16 at the Cashie Heritage Con vention Center in Wind sor. Guests learned more about how to “Love Your Heart” in celebra tion of American Heart Month. The keynote speaker of the event, America’s Nutrition Leader Zonya Foco, invigorated ev eryone with her mes sage of finding simple things to do to improve your heart health. Foco’s tips on healthy eating, exercise, stress management and wise lifestyle choices ener gized the audience. Lucas 'called' to ministry BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - A local woman is preaching God’s word through out Bertie County. The Reverend Alma Lucas says going into ministry was a calling. Lucas is a native of Bertie County and was raised in the rural area outside of Windsor. Lucas graduated from Bertie High School. She attended Shaw University in Raleigh and graduated Sum- ma Cum Laude with a Batch elor’s degree in Religion and Philosophy. Lucas continued her educa tion, graduating Cum LaUde with a Master’s degree in Divin ity from Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology of Virginia Union University. Lucas was ordained in 2004 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. “I have been a Pastor for 12 years in Bertie County,” said Lucas. Kenny Perry, who has served for the past year as Lieutenant, has been chosen to fill the spot which has been vacant since Greg Atkins re tired. “I wanted to make sure I took my time and found the right person for the job,” Sheriff Hol ley said. “The staff high ly respects Kenny and he has proven himself as a hardworking offi cer. I have confidence he’ll do a great job.” Perry joined the Ber tie County Sheriff’s Of fice in 2002 when Atkins was sheriff, and was promoted to Corporal two years later. He took over sexual assault in vestigations in 2006, and then began work ing in all areas of the sheriff’s office. “I did a little bit of everything,” he said. “I filled in wherever I was needed - be that in pa trol or doing investiga tions.” Last year. Sheriff Hol ley promoted Perry to take the place of the re tiring Lt. Carl Hoggard. At that time, he began overseeing the entire patrol division.
