B6 I MARCH 15,2017 Academia BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 'In love with reading' Author shares his story with students during event sponsored by Better Beginnings, BCS CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Some of the participants in the “Let’s Fali in Love With Read ing” event participate in crafts. WINDSOR - Local Author G. Todd Taylor, read to young students in the Bertie High School gym nasium in the evening on Feb. 16. The story sharing was a part of the "Let’s Fall in Love with Reading” event, which was orga nized by the Better Beginnings for Bertie’s Children, a division under the umbrella of the Al bemarle Alliance for Children and Families (Formerly Smart Start). The event was supported by and held in the gymnasium of the Bertie County Schools Cen tral Services Complex, and fund ing was provided by the Bertie County Commissioners. Young students and families in Bertie County came out to enjoy story sharing, to learn of avail able resources, and to experi ence the joys of reading with a child. ZtACF staff discussed ways to use storybooks and other ac tivities to develop young chil dren’s skills and love of read ing. AACF’s very own “Mother Goose” was also there! Door prizes, refreshments and other giveaways were also a part of the evening. Bobbi Holley, director of the Better Beginnings for Bertie’s Children division, said that the biggest takeaway for her was that the parents were just as excited as the children. “The parents would see a book they remembered from their child hood, and say, ‘Oh, 1 remember that book!”’ Holley added that the organi zation actually ran out of infor mational materials they were giving out because the event was so greatly attended. More than 50 families participated. “People are already asking when we will have another one,” she said. “Hopefully, it will be in May, and hopefully, we can involve the media coordinators from Bertie County Schools.” Six students receive SECU awards BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WILLIAMSTON - Six local students received NC- SECU scholarships.
