BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE APRIL 26,2017 i The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Sports Survive ingly had the game in hand, 6-1, entering the top of the seventh in ning. Bertie didn’t go qui etly. The Falcons respond ed with a four-run frame that started when Zack Castelloe was hit by a pitch with one out. A flyout left Bertie with one final chance. An infield single by Ethan Hughson put run ners on first and sec ond, and Alden Cottle reached on an error to load the bases. Trenton White then worked the count to three balls and two strikes before smacking a triple to left field that produced three runs and cut the deficit to 6-4. Scoop Hoggard was hit by a pitch and Bran don Roberson walked. Wynne then lifted starting pitcher Miller Trowel! for Slade Cowan to try and nail down the victory. ANDRE ALFRED / 2nd Chance Productions Bertie’s Alden Cottle rounds third against Lawrence Friday. Initially, Wynne moved Trowell to first base (Cowan’s position), but at the last minute changed his mind and Trowell went to center- field. The move paid off. Bertie’s next batter, Caleb Damo, ripped a single to center on the second pitch. Trowell, charging the ball, threw a strike up the third base line to catcher Jarrett Harrell, who tagged Hog gard for the final out. “Kudos to Bertie for staying with it,” Wynne said. “They started to hit Miller well with a couple of shots in the gap, and that was com pounded by a few er rors. So 1 pulled Miller and entered Slade. “Just before returning to the dugout, 1 origi nally had Miller move to first and trade with Slade because Miller has played first in the past,” Wynne added. “But go ing off the field, 1 walked over to Miller and (told) him to go to center. I’ll bring Wood (Trowell) to first and move Charles (Atkins) to right, just in case they smoke one to the outfield.” Wynne described the final sequence. “Sure enough, (two) pitches later, a shot was hit to center and Miller fielded it from the ground in throwing mo tion and threw a laser to the plate, and Jarrett moved up the line to tag Scoop for the final out. Great play, great game.” Lawrence scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth in ning. Cowan doubled to left with one out and came around on a single to left by Harrell. Lawrence took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Cowan singled and Har rell walked,, and both moved up on Atkins’ groundout. After Wood Trowell walked and White - the Bertie starter on the mound - coaxed a strike out - Cowan scored on a walk to Nixon Rascoe, and DaQuan Wilson walked to plate Harrell. Bertie cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the third frame on consecutive clutch two- out doubles from Alden Cottle and White. The Warriors matched that output in the bot tom of the third when Harrell singled with two outs, stole second, ad vanced to third when Wood Trowell reached on an error following a walk to Atkins and came around on a walk to Jo seph White. Lawrence tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the fourth, Wilson was hit by a pitch, ad vanced on a single by Austin Wynne and then a passed ball, before scoring on Miller Trow- ell’s groundout. Wynne scored on a double by Cowan. Cowan picked up the save in relief of Miller Trowell, who worked the first 6.2 innings and allowed seven hits and five runs (one earned) with six strikeouts and two walks. Trenton White, who worked the first 2.2 frames for Bertie, suf fered the loss. He walked six, struck out two and allowed two hits and three runs (two earned). Cottle toiled the last 3.1 innings for the Fal cons, giving up four hits and three runs (all earned) with one strike out and two walks. Cowan led LA with three hits in four at- bats. He scored twice and drove in a run. Harrell was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Adding one hit for the Warriors was Wynne. Cottle, White and Damb paced Bertie with a pair of hits each. Hog gard and Hughson col lected the other hits. SUCCESSFUL GOLF TOURNEY The Bertie Falcon Golf Tournament put on by the football team was a success last week at Cashie Golf and Country Club.
