B6 I MAY 3,2017 Sports BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Fourth From B1 the farm to move up one spot and draft Mitch Trubisky. Even more puzzling to me was their selection of tight end Adam Shaheen in the second round. Shaheen is a guy that looks im pressive in shorts and a t-shirt but nobody ever heard of until the Bears drafted him. A second round pick is too value for a project. The Browns appear to have been winners however with ten draft selections, they were all but guaranteed to get a few right and a few wrong. Myles Garrett should make an impact right away and, given how often the Browns utilize dime coverage, Jabrill Peppers’ ability to cover a receiver and his willingness to come up and stop the run should prove valuable. While not as celebrated a pick as his new team mates, tight end David Njoku out of Miami is another player I expect will earn both playing time and his salary in his rookie year. Another loser in this year’s draft were the Bengals. They used their first round pick on a wide receiver that ran the fastest 40 yard dash in combine history but can’t stay healthy. They used their second round pick on a running back that, while talented, is best known for punch ing a woman in the face. The Bengals lost two of their starting offensive linemen in free agency during the offseason and they responded by drafting a single offen sive tackle...in the fifth round. What teams stood out to you in this year’s draft? Email me and let me know. David Friedman is a long time sports writer and columnist. Goodwin (double) and Wilkerson, Stotes- berry and Edmondson (singles) sparked the three-run third stanza. Stotesberry allowed just one hit through five innings to pick up the win on the mound. She struck out seven and walked four. In Thursday’s win over Ridgecroft - a win that sealed the TIC reg ular season title - the Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, but then had to rally after the Rams scored three times in the top of the third inning to take the lead. Lawrence took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third frame and two more in the fourth. In the third frame, Rogers singled, and two outs later, hits by Stotes berry and Lauren Smith produced the runs. The two-run fourth Baseball From B1 then scored on another Ridgecroft miscue. Nixon Rascoe fol lowed with a single, and one out later, Austin Wynne moved the run ners up with a sacrifice bunt. The Rams were able to get the final out on a liner to shortstop, avoiding further dam age. Ridgecroft threatened in the top of the sev enth inning by putting a runner at third with two outs, but Lawrence reliever Slade Cowan coaxed a strikeout for the final out. Cowan recorded the last six outs to earn the save for the Warriors. He struck out three, didn’t issue a walk and allowed one hit and one earned rim in the last two innings. Miller Trowell, who worked the first five frames on the hifl, picked up the victory for Lawrence. He gave up three hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking five.
