Kaira Askew / Montavias Leary Bre’Asia Williams Aulander Elementary STEM celebrates Literacy Night BYTHADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance AULANDER - Literacy was the theme of the night here May 9. The students and staff of Aul ander Elementary STEM School celebrated Spring Literacy Night with a theme of “Sharing Your Favorite Book Character.” Aulander STEM Principal Clara Lee welcomed parents and stu dents to the event, which was well-attended. The students chose their fa vorite book characters, and showcased them in many cre ative ways. Some gave sum maries, while others presented the charaters through song and dance. There were students from each grade level who partici pated in the favorite character demonstration, many dressed in the garb of the character cho sen. In addition, man of the staff members were dressed as their favorite characters from chil dren’s books. In addition to the fun time of enjoying the students’ presenta tions, parents were able to learn how to help improve the literacy of their children. Bertie County Schools Assis tant Superintendent Sandra Har dy and Curriculum and Instruc tion Director Dr. Linda Justus presented information about the Summer Reading Program, which will be open to first- and second-graders. Also, teachers from Aulander Elementary STEM presented a variety of reading strategies parents can use in their homes, as well as at school, to increase reading scores. Lee ended the evening with her thanks to parents who par ticipated, and to those who al lowed their children to be part of the program. A budget hearing will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 6:30 pm at the town hall in Roxobel. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss the proposed Fiscal year 2017-2018 budget.
