WINDSOR - It arrived complete with bells and whistles - literally. The Windsor Fire Department brought home its newest member Monday afternoon - a brand new Spartan Fire Truck. Mayor Jim Hoggard, Town Admin istrator Allen Castelloe, Fire Chief Bobby Capehart, Commissioners Cathy Wilson, Lawrence Carter Jr. and Amy Williford, and a host of fire men were on hand to inspect the Plan Windsor, county approve mitigation BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - The Bertie County Commissioners and the town of Wind sor Commissioners met in a special meet ing Monday afternoon to receive updates and discuss future updates about hurricane relief funding. Holland Consulting Planner Chris Hilbert explained at a meting in Roper, that there is $ 114,000,000 available in the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). This funding is avail able for counties that submitted applications for properties that re ceived damage from the floods of Hurricane Mat thew last year. “The amount of fund ing authorized will only provide funding to one- third of the properties that applied. The state is looking at a bill to add state money,” said Hilbert. Third time’s stiii the charm Sprint triathlon deemed successful again BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance MERRY HILL - It was a beauti ful day for a triathlon. Competitors in North Caro lina and several adjoining states participated in the third annual Pound the Sound triathlon last Saturday, June 10. The triathlon, hosted at Scotch Hall, is a competition where participants begin with a 750-meter swim, followed by a 14-mile bike ride and a 5-k run. Participants began register ing at 7 a.m. and met in the transition area for a meeting at 7:30 a.m. Pound the Sound Coordina tor Todd Lane thanked the competitors for their partici pation in this year’s event. “I want to thank everyone for participating. This triath lon helps support our local Bertie County YMCA, which is one of the smallest facilities in the country,” said Lane. Participants began to pre pare for the first event of the competition, the swim, by zip ping into wetsuits and making his or her way to the water to swim several warm-up laps. The horn blew at 8 a.m. and the first wave of competitors started the swim. After that initial splash, ev ery five minutes at the sound of the horn, another round of competitors would begin. The participants started from the shore, swam out to a buoy, turned left, swam across to another buoy, then turned left and swam back to See TRIATHLON, A5 new vehicle. Ditto for services and fees. The Windsor Board of Commissioners unani mously approved the 2017-2018 budget or dinance at its regular meeting June 8. The new budget con tains no tax increase for citizens as the ad valor em tcix rate will remain at 14.5 cents per $100 valuation. There are also no increases in gar bage collection, water, sewer or electric rates. The general fund rev enues expenditures for next fiscal year are estimated at slightly more than $2.8 million, with the electric fund at just under $5.3 mil lion. Other budget fig ures include water fund ($343,000), sewer fund ($624,700) and project funds ($549,266). The total budget is just more than $9.65 million.
