The town of Windsor al ready has three names on the ballot for November. Incumbent Windsor Mayor Jim Hoggard has filed for his third term in office. He completed the paperwork to seek re-election on Friday. Two people have filed for Windsor Commissioner. In cumbent David Overton filed Friday as did Bertie High School Athletic Direc tor Randy Whitaker, who is seeking office for the first time. In Roxobel, former Mayor Gary Johnson has filed to seek the office again. No other candidate has filed in Roxobel. Powellsville has one per son seeking office as new comer Hattie Askew filed for a seat on the town board. No other candidate have filled out election paperwork thus far. At the Bertie County Commissioner’s regu lar scheduled meeting on March 6, the board approved unanimously an ordinance prohibit ing smoking and use of other tobacco products inside county buildings, and county-owned ve hicles. The ordinance also states that smoking is no longer allowed within 75-feet of county building entrances. “Scientists have prov en that second hand smoke is harmful. Fireworks lit up the sky over the Cashie River and the town of Windsor last week, celebrating America’s inde pendence. The Freedom Fireworks were held Monday, July 3 at the Roanoke Cashie River Center. The gates opened at 5 p.m. for spectators, with vendors, entertainment and more. “It was the best crowd we have had for the event in about five years. It was also the best weather we have had for the event in about five years,” said Windsor-Bertie Chamber of Commerce Exec utive Director Lewis Hoggard. “We had about two thousand people viewing the fireworks between the river center and other areas.” Vendors included Ya’ll Eat Yet, J&J Concessions, lo- See CELEBRATED, A5 BCC talks $6M Commissioners discuss funding allocation BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Better late, than never. BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance COLERAIN - The Colerain Com missioners got a first glance at the renovations and expan sion of Colerain Primary Care during their regular sched uled meeting Monday night. According to Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center CEO Carrie Schwartz, the facility received $1 mil lion for the expansion and ad dition of a pharmacy. “We went for the maximum amount being awarded and we received that amount. We used every dollar in the facil ity,” added Schwartz. The facility currently hous es two providers, and is add ing Dr. Jeffery Severa to the team. The facility offers 11 exam rooms, a nursing supervisor, mental health education, dia betes education and a triage nurse assigned to each walk- in patient. “We added glass in front of the nurse’s and provider’s stations to add additional pri vacy,” said Schwartz.
