How to defeat self destruction
Have you ever heard that you
were your own worst enemy?
Paul writes of feeling that way
in Romans 7. In Romans 8, he
writes his own 7-step plan for
defeating self-destruction. The
steps are: 1. Remind yourself dai
ly what Jesus did for you; 2, Ask
the Holy Spirit to give you better
thoughts; 3. Realize you have the
ability to say no; 4. Turn your
thoughts to God whenever you
are afraid; 5. Focus on the long
term; 6. Remind yourself God is
good and in control; and 7, Trust
that God will never stop loving
you. Paul writes that there are
3 enemies to life and peace: the
world around you; Satan com
ing after you; and the battle be
tween your old nature and your
new nature within you. You may
ask, how can 1 be set free from
me? Paul asked, “who will save
me from me?” He realized most
of his unhappiness in life was
because he listened to himself
rather than to God. What about
you? Can you benefit from the
seven mental habits Paul shares
with us in Romans 8? Many bi-
ble scholars agree that Romans
8 is the most important chapter
in the Christian bible to born
again Christians.
Remind yourself daily what
Jesus did for you. Ask yourself
“what is. salvation?” and “what
are the benefits of knowing Je
sus Christ?” Romans 8:1 reads
there is no condemnation for
those who know Jesus Christ....”
To be free from “me” you have
to remind yourself what Jesus
did for you. Jesus was hung on
the cross for you to be free of
your hang ups.
Ask the Holy Spirit to give
you better thoughts. The mind
set of the flesh is hostile to God
because it does not summit to
"This is the
day the
Lord has
made."
-PSALM 118:24

RANDALL WOODARD
God’s law. You have to ask for
life and peace. Life and peace
won’t find you until you ask for
it, search for it, work for it, and
willingly receive it.
Realize you have the ability to
say no. Romans 8:12 says “we
are not obligated to the flesh to
live according to the flesh.” Ga
latians 5:16 admonishes “let the
Spirit direct your life....” You
will never be free from self-de
struction until you decide not
to self-destruct. Ask God for the
wisdom and the strength to say
no.
Turn your thoughts to God
whenever you are afraid. Ro
mans 8:14-16 says “the Spirit
makes you God’s child....” 2
Timothy 1-17 tells us to have
“a spirit of power, love, and self-
control....” You will have your
old nature and your new Chris
tian nature with you always.
When you feed your new na
ture, it will win the battle against
self-destruction and despair go
ing on within you. Pray, “God,
help me fight my invisible war
within me.”
Focus on the long term, not
the short term. A study at Har
vard University concluded the
more long-term your thinking is,
the more successful you will be.
Eternity is long-term thinking
by Christians. The flesh thirsts
and hungers for immediate grat
ification.
The Holy Spirit blesses us
with life and peace and through
delayed gratification we lay up
treasures for eternity and share
in his glory. Romans 8:17 prom
ises “we are heirs of God....we
may also share in his glory.”
Remind yourself God is good
and in control. Romans 8:28
• states “God works for the good
of those who love him....” Re
mind yourself that God is a good
god, and he is in control.
Pray “Lord, get me out of
the way of the solutions to my
problems. Intercede for me to
keep me from self-destructing. 1
stand in the way of right and
good. You work for the good
in all things. 1 trust you Lord. 1
am leaning on your everlasting
love.”
Trust God will never stop lov
ing you. Romans 8:38-39 prom
ises “nor anything else in all cre
ation will be able to separate us
from the love of God.” He gave
his only begotten son that you
may have everlasting life. God
never stops loving a child of
God. Once you have salvation,
God is not letting you go.
God’s everlasting love sets
you free from your self-destruc
tive behavior.
Get serious about changing
your heart and commit to edify
others, testify Jesus Christ, and
glorify God. When you change
yourself, you can help change
others.
You can change the world
around you, put Satan behind
you, and win the invisible battle
within you by practicing the
seven mental habits in Romans
8. God bless you.

Take a Lesson
It never ceases to amaze me
how simply and yet how power
fully the Bible presents practical
truths to live by.
One such illustration is the ex
ample of the ant that is profiled
in the book of Proverbs chapter
6. In verse 6 we are told to “take
a lesson from the ants and be
come wise.”
Of all the things God could
have chosen to teach us from,
here he uses an ant! Most of the
time our encounters with ants
are in a negative sense. They
may have invaded our homes or
crashed our picnic in an attempt
to heist our food! 1 can’t think of
a single time when 1 considered
an ant encounter as a positive
event.
However, God in His wisdom
chose to give us some practical
instruction using this otherwise
overlooked insect. Let’s exam
ine five of these points so we
can “take a lesson and become
wise.”
Ants are not lazy and neither
should we be. The principle of
“you reap what you sow” applies
to every aspect of our lives. No
sowing, no reaping. While it is
true that we depend on God for
everything, he has given us the
"Be still
and know
that I am
God."
-PSALM 46:10,
PASTDRJAYRIVENBARK
physical and intellectual abil
ity to work and provide for our
practical needs.
We should learn a lesson from
others. Although it is good to
learn from our own mistakes,
how much better to learn from
the life of others. Everyone and
everything presents an opportu
nity from which to learn some
thing, even an ant.
Just do what needs to be done!
In verse 7 we are told the ant
has no prince, governor or ruler
to make them work.
They go about their day sim
ply doing what needs to be
done. Procrastination is a dan
gerous trait to practice. Nike has
a slogan, “Just Do It.” How much
more productive we would be if
we adopted that attitude.
Plan Ahead. Verse 8 says, they
labor hard all summer gathering
food for the winter.
Responsibility requires us to
think and to plan beyond the
moment. What we do today af
fects tomorrow.
There are consequences for Ir
responsibility. Verse 8 asks the
question, “How long will you
sleep?” Sleep is essential for our
bodies and minds, but in excess
sleep becomes an enemy to our
lives.
Any good and necessary thing
can become a hindrance, a det
riment, or a stumbling block if
done in excess and causes our
priorities to be out of order.
Verse 11 warns that poverty and
scarcity will attack you like an
armed robber. The consequenc
es for irresponsibility are sud
den, severe and sure. Whether
in the areas of our health, our
relationships, our finances or
our spiritual walk with God, we
can suffer great loss if we don’t
learn these simple lessons from
the ant. The next time you see
an ant, “take a lesson and be
come wise.”
