BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE SEPTEMBER 27,20171 A5 The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Continued Bullying eteria to learn about what is appropriate to discuss with friends regarding changes to their bodies and what should only be dis cussed with parents or guardians. The students took a verbal pretest, and the facilitator answered the questions and explained how they should not make fun of others because they may be going through the changes of puber ty During the afternoon, parents were invited to the school not only for a special performance from each grade but also to hear about the statistics and signs of bullying from the Poe Center’s Senior Direc tor of Educational Pro gramming, Thomas Ray. The first parent ses sion was for parents who have students in third through fifth grade. As the program be gan, each grade per formed a patriotic song in remembrance of Sep tember 11. After each class sang, they were excused to go back to class. Windsor Elementary School Principal Tracy Gregory welcomed ev eryone to the special information session and briefly discussed Title 1 funds' for the school. The 2017-2018 al location for Windsor Elementary School is $59,651. According to Grego ry, the money will be used in several differ ent ways throughout the school. An estimated $20,400 will be used to hire-to- hire personnel includ ing teacher assistants and tutors. $1,000 will go toward staff development training at a math con ference in Greensboro, which is required for school improvement. $7,000 will be used for supplies and materials, and $8,000 will be used for computer materials and software. “$10,000 will go to ward the purchase of additional Chrome- books for the usage of the students. After her presenta tion, she turned the program over to Ray. The program titled “Bullying Uncovered” began with a pretest. Parents could submit their answers to the multiple choice and true or false questions by using a remote. As the parents an swered each question, Ray would explain the answers. The questions varied from “Do boys bully more than girls?” to “What is the percent age of middle school ers that get bullied.” Ray gave examples of how bullying can affect the health of a child. “Bullying can physi cally cause a child to get sick. It can cause inability to eat or sleep, upset stomach and oth er problems,” said Ray. He explained he un derstood how bullying affects a child’s health because as a young girl his daughter was bul lied and it caused her to suffer from some of these symptoms. Ray also explained warning signs that may be an indication a child is being bullied. The biggest topic was the increased cases of online and social media bullying. “Children need to understand that once something is posted to the internet it cannot be taken back. Even things posted to Snap- chat can be copied with a screenshot,” he added. Ray explained that children need to understand the rules and etiquette of the internet and social me dia just as they would if they were going to a friend’s house. After the parents of grades third through fifth finished, the par ents from students in kindergarten through second grade listened to each grade perform a patriotic song and lis tened to the same pro gram. The Poe Center is located in Raleigh and specializes in bringing programs on bullying and other topics to the schools.
