Bertie High School • Bethel Assembly Christian Academy • Lawrence Academy • Bertie Middle School I Fourth and Lon David Friedman A little about a lot I had what I thought was a wonderful idea for a column topic. 1 wanted to propose a plan where the ACC and the SEC commis sioners would get into a room, drink some brown liquor and agree to terms that would result in a trade of Clemson and South Carolina. 1 really do think it is only a matter of time before Clemson leaves for the SEC an5rway, and while 1 don’t think that the Gamecocks are as good to have in the ACC as the Tigers are^ 1 think they are better than having no team in South Caro lina. My proposal does have the added benefit of helping to preserve UNC men’s basketball undefeated record against Clemson in Chapel Hill. Not like that’s important to me or anything, it’s just a coincidence. That was totally what my column was going to be about and then 1 got the alert on my phone telling me that UNC’s national championship team was declining an in vitation to the White House. 1 believe it was Dr. White from Chowan University that 1 once heard describe ath letics as the front porch of a college or university. The anal ogy always stuck with me because 1 found it both insightful and ac curate. An athletic depart ment, while only a small part of a col lege or university as a whole, often gets con siderably more media focus and visibility than the rest of the school. So when 1 picked my jaw up off the floor af ter reading the alert, 1 began to try to wrap my head around what the perception must be when the most vis ible group of students from the nations old est public university declines an oppor tunity to meet the president and visit the See FOURTH; B2 Sports WEDNESDAY • SEPTEMBER 27,2017 Inside: BACA soccer I BMS football Church Briefs Falcons fall to Manteo Redskins rally from 20-0 deficit in third quarter BY-TRAVIS JACKSON Bertie Ledger-Advance WINOSOR - This past Fri day night, the Redskins of Manteo high school traveled to Roy L. Bond Jr. Stadium to take on the Bertie Falcons. Man teo entered the contest looking to improve on their 4-1 record. The young Falcons’ struggles would contin ue as they would fall to the Redskins in heart breaking fashion by a score of 21-20. Manteo won the coin toss but deferred pos session to start the game. Bertie Senior Lacurtis Askew opened the contest with a 12- yard rush. However, the Falcons were unable to gain any further trac tion on their opening drive, forcing a punt that would pin Manteo back at their own nine- yard line. The Redskins came out of the gate show casing a rushing attack that Bertie would strug gle to find an answer for throughout the night. Manteo opened up with an 11-play drive that led them down to the Bertie’s 24-yard line, but the Falcons forced the Redskins into a long field goal attempt that came up short, deliv ering possession back over to Bertie. The remainder of the first quarter would see the two teams trade possessions back and forth. The Falcons would draw first blood early on in the second quar ter thanks to a nine- yard rushing touch down from junior Oscar Jones, making the score 6-0 in favor of Bertie. Manteo senior Ian Johnson then fumbled early on in the Red skins’ ensuing drive giv ing the ball back to the Falcons’ on the Manteo 37-yard line. f-- ■ - ABBY PARKER / bciiie LbuyBi-Aovanue See BERTIE; B2 Manteo defenders try to drag down Bertie’s Marcus Philyaw (No. 4) during Friday’s game. LA spikers sweep Hobgood Victory over Raiders caps 3-0 week for Lady Warriors W 3 BY JIM GREEN Bertie Ledger-Advance i; JIM GREEN / Bertie Ledger-Advance MERRY HILL - The third set was a struggle, but Lawrence Academy’s varsity volleyball team avoided the upset. The Warriors trailed through 41 points of the third stanza, but rallied for a 25-11, 25-10, 25-23 victory over Hobgood Academy Thursday at home. The win was part of a three-triumph week by Lawrence Academy, who improved to 9^ overall and 6-1 in the Tarheel Independent Conference. The Warriors had little trouble taking the first two sets. A four-point serving run from Lindsay Smith made it 5-0, and her sis ter, Lauren, added five straight of her own to extend the LA lead to 12-2 in the opening set. Middle hitter Danielle Belch added three kills in the early going for Lawrence. Bella Conigliaro had four straight points (with a pair of kills from Gracen Rogers) to make Lawrence Academy’s Bella Conigliaro passes to a teammate in last week’s league win over Hobgood Academy at home.
