RALEIGH -The Charter School
Advisory Board (CSAB) kept
a promise today and voted
to recommend that Bertie’s
Heritage Collegiate Leader
ship Academy have its char
ter revoked.
The board almost revoked
the school’s charter back
in June, but voted instead
to set a list of stipulations
which, if not met, would lead
to the beginning of revoca
tion proceedings.
“Honestly, I’ve been on
the Charter School Adviso
ry Board ever since there’s
been a Charter School Ad
visory Board, and I’ve never
seen a school that has been
in this bad of shape,” said
board Vice Chair Steven
Walker.
Heritage opened in 2014
and was labeled as low per
forming by the state in 2015
and 2016. At the June CASB,
the board extensively dis
cussed problems with the
school, including missing
deadlines to submit audits,
operating close to a finan
cial deficit, and having a ra
tio of teachers versus other
personnel at the school that

behind the variance re

“A variance request
has been submitted for
the property owned

AULANDER - The Aulander
Peanut Festival had a bounce-
back year.
Following two years of bat
tling Mother Nature - espe

joyed a day filled mostly with
sunshine, crowds and fun.
“Our crowds were much
larger than the past couple of
years,” Aulander Mayor Larry
Drew said. “Vendors had a
good day, and they said we
had one or two actually sell
out.”
The festival kicked off with
the annual Peanut Festival
5K, which saw runners take to
the streets at 9 a.m. The win
