Lawrence Academy’s varsity volleyball team won its final three regu lar-season matches last week to wrap up the Tarheel Independent lA Conference regular- season title. The Warriors (15-4 overall, 11-1 TIC) start ed the week with a 25- 22, 25-18, 25-16 triumph over Terra Ceia. The following day (Oct. 3), Lawrence earned its revenge on Albemarle School 25-17, 21-25, 27-25, 25-14. After the teams split the first two sets, Albe marle held an 18-11 lead in the third set before the Warriors rallied to win the set. Their mo mentum carried over into the clinching set in the win over the Patri ots. Albemarle defeated Lawrence in their first meeting - the Warriors’ lone conference loss. On Thursday (Oct. 5), Lawrence completed its season sweep over Ridgecroft School by beating the Rams 25-14, 25-22, 25-18. JIM GREEN / Bertie Ledger-Advance Megan Davenport is the libero for Lawrence Academy. Lawrence Academy is the No. 1 seed for the TIC Tournament, which is being played this week at Ridgecroft. The Warriors play to night (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. against the win ner of No. 4 Albemarle/ No. 5 Northeast Acad emy. The winner of that match advances to the finals on Thursday. Lawrence got off to a slow start this season under first-year coach Diana Bennett. The Warriors were just 1-3 after their first four matches, with two losses to Gates County and one to Wayne Country Day - both in four sets. Since that time, LA has won 14 of its last 15 matches (the first Albemarle match be ing the only blemish), including 10 in a row. Going into the tour nament, Lawrence has won 50 of 58 sets this season. The War riors are 8-1 at home and 7-3 on the road. Bertie tennis splits matches From Staff Reports Bertie High School’s tennis team split a pair of Northeastern Coastal 2A Conference matches last week. The Falcons lost 8-1 to First Flight, the top team in the league, on Oct. 2. The next day, Bertie came away with a 9-0 victory over Pas quotank at the Sutton Street Courts in Wind sor. The Falcons swept singles and doubles against Pasquotank. In singles. No. 1 Lind sey Dickens defeated Sam Brandt 10-3; No. 2 Alyssa Byrum blanked Kim Meads 10-0; No. 3 Amari White edged Bekah Soliman 10-6; No. 4 Emiley Dawson slipped past Renada White 11-10 (10-6 tie breaker); No. 5 Kaleigh Freeman defeated Al yssa Johnson 10-0 and No. 6 Stephanie Castel- loe shut out Ken Moore 10-0. Against First Flight, Bertie’s lone victory came at No. 5 singles, where Dawson defeated Sofia Dick 9-8 by taking the tiebreaker 7-4. In singles, Dickens and B3rrum both lost 8-4, White fell 8-0, Freeman was defeat ed 8-1 and Castelloe was edged 8-4. The Nighthawks won the doubles matches 8-2, 8-1 and 8-1. Public Hearing and Comment Period on Proposed Changes to MERHA Schedule of Charges for Maintenance Work Mid-East Regional Housing Authority has been working on proposed changes to our Schedule of Charges for Maintenance Work for the purpose of performing routine maintenance & for making improvements and repairs. In addition, the Schedule is to ensure that all tenants are fairly charged. This Schedule does not apply to normal wear and tear. We have shared the draft of the proposed changes with the Resident Advisory Board (RAB) and with both the federal and state agencies, which regulate MERHA. LA netters top Knights From Staff Reports WILLIAMSTON - Lawrence Academy’s girls tennis team earned a season sweep over Riverside last week. The Warriors captured wins in all but one match en route to an 8-1 victory at West End Courts on Oct. 5. In the loss against Lawrence Academy, Riv erside was only able to win one match against the Warriors (9-4 over all), when the Knights’ No. 1 doubles team of Moore and Reason teamed for an 8-5 tri umph over Emma Cobb and Chloe Walston. Lawrence Academy won the remaining matches. In singles, Cobb de feated Stephanie Moore 6-2, 6-3; Walston defeat ed Tara Leggett 6-1, 6-1; Hailey Hope Gardner defeated Caroline Rea son 6-0, 6-2; Savannah Stevens stopped Rachel Harris 6-0, 6-2; Beatrice Mordecai defeated Jen nifer German 6-3,6-0 and Isabella Spruill defeated Sadie Tice 6-1, 6-0. In doubles. River side’s teams of Leggett and Harris fell 8-1 to Gardner and Stevens and Tice and German dropped an 8-2 decision at No. 3.
