Alice Merretta Ward Baskin
AHOSKIE, NC - Alice Merretta Ward Baskin,
age 77, passed away on October 8, 2017 at
her home, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Baskin was bom in Windsor, NC, Bertie
County, on March 26, 1940, a daughter of the late
Booker T Ward and Texaima Speller Ward. Alice
moved to New York at an early age, working var
ious jobs before working and retiring for Cam
bridge Instruments in Ossining, NY. She returned
to North Carolina in 1991. Alice loved gardening
and reading. She was a loving, devoted wife, moth
er and grandmother, her family meant everything
to her. She wUl be dearly missed by aU.
Besides her parents, Alice was preceded in death
by a sister, Hilda Ward and a brother, Willie “BiUy
Boy” Ward.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving and de
voted husband, Murdock Baskin, three daughters.
Arm Cherry and Carolyn Lloyd, both of Windsor,
NC, and Rosalyn Baskin of Ahoskie, NC; son, Ru
fus Frazier of Charlotte, NC; three sisters, Joyce
Ward, Barbara Bums, and Beulah Bond, all of
Windsor, NC; grandchildren; Aja Carson-Gurley
and husband Andrew, Christina Lloyd, Allison
Cherry, Crystal Lloyd, Rydrier Stevenson, Jabriel
Stevenson, Nasheem Frazier, and JacQuien Fra
zier; great grandchildren, Jamison Gurley, Kellen
Gurley, Marquasha Everette, Keajah Lee, Ariqja
Lee, Chloe Lloyd, Madison Holley, along with nu
merous extended family.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Oc
tober 10, 2017, from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Gar-
rett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC.
A celebration of Ufe service will be held on
Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at 1:00 pm at the
Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service - Ahoskie Chapel,
Ahoskie, NC, with. Rev Anthony Baker officiating.

Joseph Eugene “Gene” Northcott
COLERAIN - Joseph Eugene “Gene” Northcott,
80, of Quebec Road, died Saturday, October 7,2017
at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
He was bom in Bertie Coimty to the late Merle Eu
gene and Odell Wynne Northcott and was prede
ceased by a brother, Ronnie Northcott. Gene was
a member and former deacon of Mars HiU Baptist
Church. He was a farmer, worked with Vepco and
retired from the Department of Transportation. He
was a former Ruritan and 4-H Leader. Gene was
also a former Fire Chief and member of the Trap
Volimteer Fire Department and served in the US
Army, stationed in Frankfurt, Germany.
Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday,
October 10, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Highland Memo
rial Gardens with military honors. Rev. Preston
Jemigan will officiate.
Survivors include his daughters, Patti N. Hen
ning and husband, Jim, of Poplar Branch; Jogina
N. Russell and husband. Tommy, of Greenville; sis
ter, Linda N. Wynns and husband, Lee, of Colerain;
grandchildren, Jason Goetz and wife Jenny, lyier
Russell; great grandchildren. Haven and Harper
Goetz.
The family will receive friends Monday, October
9th from 6-7:30 PM at Walker Funeral Home, Wind
sor. Memorial gifts may be made to the Trap Fire
Department or to the American Cancer Society.

Rabies Shot Clinic
Bertie County Animal Control will host a Fall Rabies Clinic
from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11 at Carolina
Farm Center and 7 until 8 p.m. at Askewville Fire Depart
ment. The cost is $7 per animal for a first time shot and

Road Closure
The Department of Transportation anticipates the closure
of Tripp Road in Bertie County to allow for the reconstruc
tion and resurfacing of the road. The road is expected to
remain closed through Friday, Oct. 27. Local traffic and
emergency vehicles will still have access to the road. For

The 8th Annual Bertie Spooktacular 5K and One-Mile Fam
ily Fun Run/Walk and Fall Jamboree will be held October
