BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE OCTOBER 11,20171 The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Business Busy! GRAND OPENING INAULANDER The Chamber hosts an update every Thurs day morning on Magic 95.9 FM at 8:30 a.m. to let listeners know what is happening in the area. Station owner and disc jockey Bill Benja min and 1 discuss these events. This week 1 was telling him about all the events happening in Bertie County over the week end. He remarked that he often hears people say that there is noth ing going on around here. He tells them that is certainly not true. This past weekend was a prime example of if you thought nothing was happening you just did not have your eyes open. Thursday night the Bertie Arts Council held an exhibition of the art work of Bailey Phelps and a book signing by Phill “Butch” Bragg. The acrylics by Bai ley Phelps were quite remarkable. Butch is quite the character and adventurer. His latest book is “Cornfield for Clouds” which details his adventure flying his biplane across middle America. Check out the artwork and buy “Corn fields for Clouds” at the Bertie Arts Council at 124 S. King S., Windsor. This Saturday, Aul- ander held its Peanut Festival despite inter mittent rain. The event was a success. A 5k Fun run began the event with a run through Aul- ander and out into the countryside and back. There were lots of ven dors, crafts and enter tainers during the day. Moonshine closed out the event with a great musical performance as always. Hats off to the good folks of Aul- ander for making their community better. All the people of Aul- ander come together as one to put on a great free event. The com munity has suffered setbacks like many small towns in eastern North Carolina. Those setbacks such as the closing of Golden Pea nut and Southern Bank have been countered by the opening of Fam ily Dollar and Dolly’s Chamber Chatter Lewis Hoggard Cafe. We held a ribbonut- ting on Saturday, Octo ber 7th for the,Baker Peanuts Southern Traditions at 704 East Church Street. This building was the old J.L. Morris auction house site. Extensive renova tions have been made and now the building is a processing site with a beautiful showroom. Danielle Baker is the owner of the business, and her staff has done an incredible job getting the facility ready for the ribbon cutting and grand opening. Quite a crowd assembled with lots of entertainment for the attendees. Their products can be purchased on-site or online at bakerspea- nuts.com or such na tional chains as Harris Teeter, Lowe’s Foods, Kroger and Publix. The community of In dian Woods and Histor ic Hope teamed up with the Tuscarora Nation to commemorate 300 years of Indian Woods. The theme was a “Love of Family and History.” Community socials were held at Blue Jay Community Center on Saturday night and His toric Hope on Sunday night. 1 did not get to every thing that happened this weekend but re member when you think nothing is happening to open your eyes and explore. Bertie County has a lot to offer as well as does the rest of east ern North Carolina. Lewis Howard is Ex ecutive Director of the Windsor/Bertie Cham ber of Commerce.
