BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE OCTOBER 18,20171 A5 The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Continued Kidnap From A1 to drive north on Old U.S. 17. The business owner was quick on her feet and was able to tell the suspect she had money in her home, which she would give him. “She did this knowing her husband would be waiting up for her to re turn home from work,” Chief Lane said. Once arriving at the victim’s residence, she was forced into her home, where her hus band was waiting in the living room. The suspect then ordered the husband to the ground. “Once the suspect released the merchant from his grasp, her hus band was able to reach his handgun and fire several rounds at the suspect,” Chief Lane said. “The suspect im mediately fled from the house on foot.” Windsor Police Cpl. Frank Ratzlaff and Offi cer A.J. Lanier respond ed to the residence, and immediately began searching for the sus pect after getting a de scription. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office was con tacted for assistance, and dispatched K-9 Of ficer Snyder to assist in the search. Chief Lane said the officers continued the search, but were un able to locate him until a tip came in at approx imately 5:30 a.m. “The tip led officers to search a vacant mobile home on Tims Street in Windsor,” Chief Lane said. “A search of the vacant home revealed a male subject, who matched the descrip tion of the suspect, hid ing inside. The officers took the suspect into custody.” The officers charged Avery Lamark Holley of Edenton with first degree kidnapping, common law robbery, felony breaking and entering, felony lar ceny and other related charges. He was placed in the Bertie-Martin Re gional Jail under a $1 million bond. In addi tion, he faces charges in Chowan County for common law robbery and assault on a fe male. “1 can’t say enough about the work of the police officers handling this case,” Chief Lane said. “They never gave up searching for the suspect, and were able to use contacts within the community for tips that led to a peaceful resolution in this case. “The victim in this case did a great job of not panicking and was able to control the sus pect and de-escalate the situation,” he add ed. Chief Lane also ex pressed his apprecia tion to the Bertie and Martin county sheriffs’ offices for their assis tance. “While there is no immediate or known threat to local busi nesses, 1 encourage all business owners who may be working late to contact the police de partment in advance so patrol officers can check on them through out the late night or early morning hours,” Chief Lane closed.
