Rules
for fans
My wife Dawn got
us tickets to see my
Tar Heels host Virgin
ia this past weekend.
We had a wonder
ful time despite the
loss, but it only took
one half of one quar
ter before 1 knew
what this week’s col
umn was going to be
about.
The time has come
to once again review
the rules of attending
a sporting event and
being a fan.
Unfortunately this
column is too late
for the Carolina Pan
thers fans that have
become infamous for
punching, and being
punched, but hope
fully it will help you.
Fan is short for fa
natic.
If you are a fan, you
are early. If you are a
fan, you are loud. If
you are a fan, you are
passionate. If you are
a fan, you don’t go
to a game to sit the
whole time.
Now before some
of you begin cursing
me, 1 am not suggest
ing that the person
in front of you at the
game next week stand
the entire time.
I’m merely suggest
ing that he or she, or
you for that matter,
should not sit the
entire time. More im
portantly, if you do
decide to sit or they
do decide to stand, 1
suggest you get over
it-
1 may not be en
couraging fans to
stand and cheer for
the entire game, but 1
do think it would be a
wonderful thing.
If done correctly, it
would create an in
credible home field
advantage.
If you don’t believe
me, just ask the Seat
tle Seahawks whose
fans are so good at
this they call them
the “12th Man.’’
You may have no
ticed 1 put “if done
correctly” in the para
graph above, and this
was not coincidence.
Please don’t make
noise when your
football team is on
offense except to
cheer your team af-

WINDSOR - The path to
the top is never easy.
Somehow, two weeks
into the Northeastern
Coastal Conference,
only two teams stand
unbeaten - and one
of them is Bertie High
School.
The Falcons knocked
off league foe Pas
quotank County High
School 28-0 Friday in
the friendly confines of
Roy L. Bond Jr. Stadium
to maintain a first-place
tie with Northeastern
High School. The win,
coupled with Hertford
County’s loss at First
Flight, left only the Ea
gles and Falcons soaring
atop the league stand
ings headed into their
showdown this week in
Elizabeth City.
“’We know we have a
tall task waiting Friday,
but we’re in exactly the
position we wanted to
be in - two wins in two
conference games,” sec
ond-year Falcon football
boss Grantiey Mizelle
said.
The win for the Fal
cons came exactly the
way Mizelle drew it up,
scoring early and main
taining control of the
game from the begin
ning.
Bertie scored in each
quarter, and pitched
the shutout on defense
to earn win number four
on the season.
The first drive set the
tone for the game when
Bertie marched 58 yards
on seven plays to take
the early lead.
Sophomore quarter
back Isaiah Williams
found Nate Cheese-
boro on a fourth-and-9
to keep the drive alive.
Then, three plays later,
Lacurtis Askew scam
pered 41 yards to pay
dirt. Williams added the
conversion himself, and
Bertie led 8-0 with 9:05
still to play in the first
quarter.
The Panthers seemed
poised to answer as
Trequan Williams
rushed for 17 yards
