scrimmage. The se
nior running back then
added a 21-yard scam
per four plays later as
Pasquotank moved the
football inside the Fal
con 30-yard line.
The Bertie defense,
however, stepped up
and held the Panthers
thanks in part to a tack
le for loss by Cheese-
boro and Nate Cherry.
The next threat also
came from Pasquotank as
the Panthers drove from
their own 42-yard line to
the Bertie 12, only to be
turned away on fourth-
and-goal from the 12.
In each of their wins,
the Falcons have had
a signature drive, and
they found that late in
the second quarter. Af
ter taking oyer at their
own 12, the BHS offense
drove 88 yards for a
touchdown just before
the half.
Williams, Askew and
Dequandre White all
had key runs on the
drive. Askew had car
ries of 15 and 16 yards
while White rushed for
10 and 13 yards on sep
arate carries.
The score came when
Williams went in from
the 3-yard line. The con
version run failed, but
Bertie led 14-0 with 1:26
to play in the first half.
The Panthers looked
to have another prom
ising drive going late in
the second quarter, but
Darius Rascoe stepped
in front of a pass and
ended the threat with
an interception.
Williams took a knee
and allowed the Fal
cons to head into the
intermission with a two-
touchdown lead.
Rascoe again helped
the Falcons as the sec
ond half started, recov
ering a fumble that gave
Bertie possession at the
PCHS 45-yard line.
It took just two plays
for Bertie to score when
Williams to connect
with Jamarii White on
a 44-yard scoring pass.
The conversion failed,
but Bertie led 20-0 with
10:59 still to play in the
third quarter.
The final score for
the Falcons came on
defense when Marcus
Phllyaw picked off a

Williams added the
conversion, and Ber
tie led 28-0.
Pasquotank had
one additional threat
in the fourth quarter,
but again the Falcon
defense rose to the oc
casion and thwarted
their efforts, sealing
the shutout victory. It
was the first shutout
win for Bertie since
Oct. 17, 2014 when
the Falcons blanked
Currituck 26-0.
Askew led the offen
sive attack with 151
yards on 19 carries.
Williams was 3-for-5
passing for 70 yards,
and recorded a 143.8
quarterback rating.
Defensively, Emonte
Mebane led the attack
with seven tackles,
while Ke5aintra Lee
added six tackles and
Jordin Morning had
five.
Bertie and North
eastern will meet
with first place in the
league on the line Fri
day night in Elizabeth
City. Kickoff is set for
7:30 p.m.
Bertie Middle School crowned
its 2017 Homeconning King
and Queen (left) at halftime
of the recent football game
against Riverside Middle at
Roy L. Bond Jr. Stadium.

LA JV football earns victory
From Staff Reports
ROCKY MOUNT - Law
rence Academy’s ju
nior varsity football
team slipped past
Faith Christian 24-20
last week.
The Warriors took
an 8-0 lead in the first
quarter when Logan
Whitfield scored on a
31-yard run and Charles
Atkins added the two-
point conversion.
Lawrence led 16-14
in the third quarter on
a 23-yard run by Atkins
and the conversion by
Wheeler.
The Warriors took a
24-20 advantage in the
fourth quarter when
Wheeler ripped off a 48-
yard run and then add
ed the conversion.
The Warriors’ defense
held Faith Christian at
midfield with 2:30 re
maining and then ran
the clock out to pre
serve the victory.
ever, that for all of these
scenarios, make as
much noise as possible
when it’s the opposing
team involved.
Most importantly
though, be respectful.
1 always cheer on my
teams, 1 occasionally boo
officials, 1 stand up and
scream on third down
defensive stands and 1
encourage those around
me to do the same.
What I don’t do, and
what I won’t allow oth
ers around me to do, is
be rude or inappropri
ate to others. Regarding
this, 1 don’t care what
color jersey anyone is
wearing.
That last sentence
isn’t entirely true. I won’t
be silent while someone
around me at a game be
comes a bully, but 1 do
care what color they are
wearing, especially If 1
am wearing it too.
Be a fan...be early, be
loud, be passionate, be
animated, be strategic.
Please though, don’t
embarrass your fellow
fans, friends and family
by being a jerk.
If you do, you might
find yourself on the in
ternet too.
