Hunter says rumors are false Democrat confirms he will seek re-election BYTHADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance RALEIGH - Rep. Howard J. Hunter is firm in his commitment to his dis trict. Late last week, Rep. Hunter re- affirmed an earlier commit- ^ ^ ment to Rep. Hunter election to his seat in the N.C. House of Rep resentatives no matter which counties he rep resents. Currently, Rep. Hunt er is elected to serve the people of Bertie, Gates, Hertford and a portion of Pasquotank County. The districts drawn by Republicans in the N.C. General Assem bly would shift Hunter to represent Hertford, Gates and all of Pas quotank County. Some of those districts are be ing redrawn by a Special Master appointed by the U.S. District Court because the court re jected maps drawn by Republicans. Last week. Rep. Hunt er said he wanted to diffuse a rumor that has been making its way around the eastern portion of the state. He said he has every inten tion of staying in the N.C. House. See HUNTER, A5 Celebrations abound Bertie County has busy holiday season BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance Christmas is a busy a time of year in Bertie County. Beginning the week next week and continu ing until Christmas Day, itself, citizens of the county will have many opportunities to cele brate a wonderful holi day season. The Askewville Com munity Christmas Tree Lighting will kick off the holiday season at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27. The Colerain Christ mas parade will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. Lineup will take place In this edition at Etheridge Road. The parade route will turn onto Hwy 45 North and continue onto Main Street, then turn right at the stoplight on Riv er Street, and turn on Sunrise Street, and will end where it started. The Roxobel Christ mas tree lighting will begin from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Roxobel Fire De partment. There will be Christ mas caroling, pictures with Santa and more. The Bertie County Arts Coun cil hosted its “Little Art, A Re ally Big Show” fundraiser last Friday at The Gallery. This was the organization’s first time hosting the event. In the weeks leading up to the event, artists volunteered to create works of art no larg er then 8 inches by 10 inches. Blank canvases were provided to each of the artists. Other items donated includ ed paintings, photographs, jew elry, stained glass, books, pot tery, gift baskets and more. More than 50 artists contrib uted over 99 items for the fund raiser. Members of the Bertie Arts Council sold admission tickets for the event. All tickets were sold out two weeks before the event. Vidant Bertie hospital and other local first responder or ganizations hosted the Commu nity Safety Day at the old Bertie High School Gymnasium. The event was hosted for first and second grade students across Bertie County. This is the second year for the event.
