WINDSOR - Welcome back.
The Bertie County Public Li
brary, formally known as the
Lawrence Memorial Library,
held its grand reopening Mon
day evening.
The library opened at its new
location in Windsor Square
Shopping Center after its doors
closed over a year ago due to
flood damage from Tropical
Storm Julia and Hurricane Mat
thew.
“It has been a long process and
a lot of hard work,” said Bertie
County Public Library Branch
Manager Nancy Hughes.
The opening kicked off with a
ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. Library
staff, community leaders and
supporters of the library cut
the red ribbon with much ex
citement for the long awaited
opening.
“1 would like to thank the Ber
tie County Maintenance Depart
ment, the Bertie County Com
missioners, the library staff and
all the volunteers who worked
tirelessly on getting the library
back open,” said Bertie County
Commissioner Tammy Lee.
Commissioner Lee requested
Father Aaron Wessman of Holy
Spirit Catholic Church to pray
over the new library.
Patrons of all ages came to
look, visit and get familiar with
the new library.
In the children’s section, par
ents could be found sitting on
the floor flipping through books
with children.

Hodges shows
he’s a fighter
BY CAL BRYANT

GREENVILLE - Brandon
Hodges has stepped to
the plate, both physi
cally and figuratively,
on numerous occasions
during his 42 years on
Earth.
Whether it was a high
school athlete looking
for a mentor to help
sharpen his skills, or a
young family member
seeking a role model to
guide them through a
tough time in life, Hodg
es has answered their
call for assistance.
Now the proverbial
shoe is on the other
foot as Hodges requires
a medical procedure
if he wants to live to
see his two young chil
dren possibly grow and
mature into the God
fearing and big-hearted
man he is today.
Hodges, a Como na
tive and former head
baseball coach at his
high school alma mater
- Hertford County - as
well as at Ridgecroft
School, is battling IgA
nephritis. He can sur
vive through periodic
dialysis, but only a kid
ney transplant can give
Hodges the quality of
life he seeks.
IgA refers to the an
