Bertie High School • Bethel Assembly Christian Academy • Lawrence Academy • Bertie Middle School St)orts WEDNESDAY-DECEMBER 13,2017 Inside: All-conference Middle schools ■ Church Briefs -Oii’tn Idfi David Friedman Lots to discuss I have several things I want to “talk” about and 1 don’t want to choose just one, so I’m not going to. 1 love football, I played football and 1 coached football. See^ ing what happened to Ryan Shazier and Tom Savage makes me hope my 6-year-old son grows up to love play ing basketball, soccer or baseball. The sport is violent and 1 enjoy that part of the game, but there seems to be more questions than answers regarding the long term effects it has on those who play. If my son does de cide to play football, I certainly hope he gets a chance to play in the snow. 1 watched the Army - Navy game on Saturday and was instantly flooded with memories of my one and only football game in the snow, a match up against Greenville Rose in high school. 1 couldn’t imagine football could get any better than that. Then 1 saw the snow at the game in Buffalo on Sunday. How much fun must that have been? The NFL may be dealing with some PR issues but finan cially, they are doing just fine. Verizon just agreed to pay the NFL half a billion dollars every year to stream games. First and fore most, that’s a nice chunk of change for the league and play ers to enjoy. Second ly, how much money does Verizon expect to make off custom ers streaming NFL games if they are pre pared to pay out 500 million dollars a year for the right to do so? My guess is, net neu trality laws will have a large impact on that answer. If you are a college basketball fan and you aren’t getting excited about what Carolina versus Duke might look like this year, 1 just don’t know what to think of .you.
