WINDSOR - Bertie Mid dle School’s basket ball teams suffered a doubleheader sweep at home against Riverside on Monday. The Knights won the boys game 43-22 and the girls game 44-34. In the boys game, the Phoenix (0-2 over all) could only manage three free throws in the first quarter as River side built a sizable lead. Bertie improved its offensive output in the second half but was not able to complete a comeback. Zylee Bazemore led Bertie with nine points, followed by Kemaurien Bishop with six points. Riverside was led by Jaylen Williams with 11 points and Avion Pinner with eight. Shamar Wil loughby chipped in six points. In the girls game. Riverside produced 11 points in every quarter and held off a Bertie comeback to win by double digits. Jessica Stokes was the lone Phoenix player to score in the first quarter as Bertie trailed 11-2. Riverside held an 11-9 edge in the third quar ter and took a 33-24 lead into the final stan za. Boone, Peele, Stokes and West accounted for Bertie’s offense in the quarter. West collected five of her team’s 10 points in the final quarter but it wasn’t enough. Riverside was led by Keshiya Rhodes with 23 points. Brianna Bland added seven and Jerma- ria Brown had six. West led Bertie with 11 points, while Stokes added eight.
