Wind sor Po lice Chief Todd Lane said a female senior citizen was leaving Subway in the Windsor Square shopping center at ap proximately 11:35 a.m. James Allen Jr. Dec. 14. After making it inside her vehicle, a man approached the car and pulled the door open before allegedly pointing a pistol in the victim’s face. He threat ened her life before tak ing her purse and flee ing the scene. Windsor Police Offi cers responded to the call with Det. According to Wind sor Police Chief Todd Lane, a suspect was ar rested last week after Officer Jessie Mizelle attempted to ticket a driver who was operat ing a vehicle while his license was suspended. Officer Mizelle was re portedly patrolling near the Duck Thru No. 9 in Windsor Square when he saw the subject driv ing on a suspended li cense. Before the officer could stop the vehicle, the driver exited and went inside the store. Officer Mizelle waited near the vehicle for the man to return from the store. “The suspect exited the store and, as he saw Officer Mizelle ap proach him, started stuffing items into his pants and walking in the opposite direction of his vehicle,” Chief Lane said. “Officer Miz- See DRUGS,A5 Superintendent hired by BCS BYTHADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Bertie County Schools has a new superintendent. Dr. Catherine Ed monds will take over the duties of Superin tendent of Schools on Feb. 1, 2018 following her selection last week by the Bertie County Board of Education. Dr. Edmonds will be come the fifth person to lead the district in the past two years. She follows Elaine White, who retired in June of 2016, Dr. Julius Walker In this edition (interim). Carriage rides highlight season BY LESLIE BEACHBOARO Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - It’s a Windsor tradi tion. The Windsor/Bertie County Chamber of Commerce held its annual Christmas carriage rides this month. The rides have becohie a tradition for the small town of Windsor in the weeks leading up to Christmas. People come from near and far to enjoy the scenery from a horse drawn carriage. The rides were held from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, Tuesday, Dec. 12 and Thurs day, Dec. 14. The carriage rides started at the Bertie County Arts Coun cil’s Gallery and went down King St. toward the Cashie River Bridge. The ride then turned left onto East Pitt St. and followed around York St. and Water St. The rides’ then turned back onto King Street, then turn left onto W. Annual wreath ceremony held BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Edgewood Cem etery veterans were honored this holiday season. Individuals from near and far gathered at Edgewood Cem etery at 12 noon Saturday, Dec 16 for the annual nation wide Wreaths Across America event. The event honors veterans by placing a live balsam wreath on his or her tombstone and saying their name as a way of paying tribute during the holi day season. Windsor Mayor Jimmy Hog gard opened the event. “1 would like to welcome ev eryone to Windsor. This is a great event. It is a happy occa sion. Somber, but happy. There are not so many veterans here anymore, but it’s nice to see 60 and 70-year-old kids out here,” said Hoggard. Participant Joe Hale led the participants in prayer at the start of the event.
