The year
that was...
2017 has officially
come to a close, and it
was a year to remem
ber.
The first thing that
will inevitably pop in my
mind when 1 reflect on
2017 was my Tar Heels
mens basketball team
winning their seventh
national championship.
Your college basketball
team being the only
worthwhile squad to
win their last game of
the season is always
sweet, but after the pre
vious year’s heartbreak
ing loss to Villanova
in the championship
game, this win seemed
even sweeter.
2017 was the year of
the greatest press tour
in history. I am speaking
of course about Floyd
Mayweather and Con
nor McGregor, Their
boxing match was as
disappointing as any
logical person expect
ed, but the large and un
filtered mouths of both
imbeciles provided a
plethora of entertaining
press highlights in the
months leading up to
the fight.
2017 was the year
of the 2016 Oklahoma
City Thunder. The 2016
version of the Thunder
featured Kevin Durant,
who went on to win his
first NBA title with the
Golden State Warriors
this past year. It also
featured Russell West
brook who, without Du
rant to share the ball
with, won the league
MVP award and became
the only player other
that Oscar Roberson to
average a triple-double
for an entire season.
Houston was on ev
erybody’s minds in
2017. The city and its
people took major dam
age when Hurricane
Harvey came through in
late August and flooded
the city, forcing nearly
40,000 people from their
homes.
While sports can be
useful in times of trage
dy as it can offer a tem
porary mental escape,
sports became practi
cally helpful as well
when Texans star J.J.
Watt used his platform
to help raise 37 mil
lion dollars in aid. The
Houston Astros provid
ed the perfect mental
escape a few months
later when they won
their first World Series
in seven games against
the Dodgers.
I’m not certain what
2018 has in store for
us, but 1 appreciate you
spending a few minutes
of it with me already.
I hope you and yours
have an amazing year!
