He was a graduate of Micro High School, attend
ed Atlantic Christian College and the NC State Col
lege of Engineering. Jimmy retired from Eaton
Corporation after 37 years. He was a member of
Micro United Methodist Church and a former Sun
day School Teacher. Jimmy loved farming, fishing,
forestry, and hunting, especially himting with his
fox and deer hormds. He was a past member of
Hickory Ridge Hunting Club and WoodviUe Gun
Club. He was a foimder of the Johnston County
Houndsmen Club and Aldonia Farms, a fanning
and forestry concern.
Jimmy was a member of the Town of Selma Plan
ning Board and Board of Adjustment.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in
death by his brother Joseph Phillips, brother in
law and sister in-law Marvin T. Dazey and Faye
Dazey, and brothers in-law Bill Hancock and Ed
win Royce Smith.
He is survived by Ids wife of 52 years, Julia
“Becky” PhiUips; daughter Gara P. Craven and hus
band Chris of Mooresville, NC; son Jonathan S.
Phillips and wife Mary Paige of Raleigh, NC; sister
Gara Vann Hancock of Hillsborougli, NC; grand
children McKenna B. Craven, J. Cameron Cra
ven, Jonathan S. Phillips Jr, Caroline D. Phillips,
and William C. Phillips; brothers in-law and sisters
in-law Bettie Smith, VTUiam and Vivian Caldwell,
Kenneth and Barbara Smith, Eric and Susan God
win, AnneU Beasley, Teresa Foster and many niec

A visitation wiQ be held at Parrish Funeral Home
in Selma, NC on Simday December 31st from 2:00
pm to 4:00 pm with a private service at a later date.

Thelma Raynor Hoggard
WINDSOR - Thelma Rajmor Hoggard 94, a res
ident of Three Rivers Nursing Home, and former
ly of 114 Rhodes Ave., died Simday December 31,
2017. She was bom in Martin County October 15,
1923 to the late WiUiam E. and Ada Wyrm Ray
nor and was predeceased by her husband, Jim
Allen Hoggard, Sr.; sons William “Bill” Hoggard
and Richard Hoggard; daughter, Stella Rogerson;
brother, Thurman Lee Raynor; grandchildren, Ro
berta Lyrm and John Calvin Adams. Thelma was a
member of Windsor Pentecostal Holiness Church
and attended Windsor Assembly of God. She was
a homemaker and loved to garden.
Funeral services will be held Friday January 5,
2017 at 2:00 PM at the Walker Fimeral Home Chap
el by the Rev. Roger Leggett. A private burial will
follow in Edgewood Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughters; Patricia Bur
den of Windsor, Terry Adams and Bonnie Wright
of Merry Hill; sons, George Hoggard of Cherokee,
OK, Jim Hoggard, Jr. of Merry Hill; brother, Saun
ders Raynor of Chicago, IL; sisters, Sarah Smith
and Jeanette Elks of Wllliamston; 17 grandchil
dren; 25 great grandchildren; 2 great great grand
children.
The family will receive fiiends from 1-2 PM, Fri
day, January 5th at Walker Funeral Home and from
the home of Patricia Burden, 101 S. Middle Street
at other times.

scheduled meeting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11 at Windsor

Children’s Arts and Crafts Class
The Bertie County Arts Council will host a children’s art class
titled “Cut Out Paper Collage Inspired by Henri Matisse” from
4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11 at the Gallery. The fee
