WINDSOR - Slowly moving
forward.
The town of Windsor is
methodically moving for
ward with the execution of
documents needed to se
cure the $6 million in flood
mitigation dollars awarded
to the town.
The $6 million will be used
to purchase 34 homes and
elevate 11 others. It has been
awarded, but still is working
its way through channels,
according to Chris Hilbert of
Holland Consulting. Hilbert
gave the update at the most
recent meeting of the Wind
sor Board of Commission
ers.
Hilbert said his organiza
tion was working to provide
the state government infor
mation it needs to provide to
the Federal Emergency Man
agement Agency (FEMA).
“We’re not anticipating
anything to happen for the
next couple of months,” he
said.
Windsor Mayor Pro-Tem-
pore Cathy Wilson asked
whether the 45 people
whose properties would be
bought-out or elevated were
aware they qualified for thd
program. ?
Hilbert said most of them
know, but the town has not

WINDSOR - First steps.
The Windsor Board
of Commissioners took
the first step toward
applying for a Commu

Grant (CDBG) to help
with housing projects
in the town.
Chris Hilbert with
Holland Consulting ap
peared before the board
as part of a public hear
ing to inform the public
of the chance to apply
for the CDBG for Neigh
borhood Revitalization
in 2018.
Hilbert told Mayor Jim
Hoggard and the board
priority will be given to
flood-impacted commu
nities, which will pro
vide the town of Wind
sor the opportunity to
receive funding.
“We will have more
details about what the
grant will look like be
fore the next public
hearing,” Hilbert indi
cated.
Hilbert indicated the

WINDSOR - 2017 was a re
sounding success.
Vidant Bertie Hospital and
Vidant Chowan Hospital had
excellent years, and contin
ued to provide quality health
care services to the citizens
of Bertie and Chowan coun
ties, according to President
Jeff Sackrison.
“Our employees are dedi
cated to the Vidant Health
mission to improve the
health and well-being of east
ern North Carolina, and they
demonstrate that on a daily
basis,” Sackrison said. “As 1
reflect on the work the staff
members did on their respec
tive campuses, and in the
community. I’m filled with
pride.”
New initiatives last year
included a Nurse Residency
program, a Live Chat and
the first Health Careers Boot
Camp with John A. Holmes
High School in Edenton.
In addition, several staff
members obtained advanced
degrees and pursued leader
ship development opportuni
ties, he said.
“The number of community
events that both hospitals fa

year is remarkable,” Sack-

WINDSOR - There is a
growing chance that
Bertie County will see
another round of wintry
precipitation today.
Although the amount
may not be as much
as the amounts seen in
the winter storm earlier
this month, any amount
of precipitation on road
way^ can become a dan
ger.
According to North
Carolina Emergency
Management,, there will
be a chance of rain and
snow showers before
10 a.m., followed by a
likely snowfall. It will be
cloudy with a high near

wind increasing to five
to nine miles per hour
in the morning.
The chance of precipi
tation is 70 percent with
new snow accumulation
of one to two inches
possible.
Wednesday night
there is a chance of

GREENVILLE - Nothing
ever goes as planned.
For Brandon Hodges,
that fact may wind up
working in his favor.
Hodges, a Como na
tive and former standout
baseball player at Hert
ford County High School
where he later came back
to coach before moving
to Greenville, is currently
battling IgA nephritis. He
can survive through pe
riodic dialysis, but only a
kidney transplant can al
low Hodges to live some
what of a normal life.
IgA refers to the anti
body molecule. This is a
normal substance pres
ent in all of us that helps
to fight Infections in the
throat, airways, and in
testine.
In IgA nephritis, the
antibody gets deposited
in an abnormal way in
the filter units of the kid
neys. The buildup of this
material damages the
filtering units, allowing
protein and blood to leak
into the urine. Both kid
neys are equally affected
by this condition. This is
a kidney disfunction that
worsens with age.
