BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE FEBRUARY 7,20181 B5 The fabric of Bertie County since / 832 The Snowman Three-and-a-half year-old twins. A boy and a girl. A grand pa who was going to help them . build their first snowman. 1 urged them to clean up their toys, then we would proceed out side with the building project. (Not exactly in those words, but it worked.) After bundling up, we went out to the frigid cold to create a life-sized snowman that would embed in their memories for a lifetime. It was 1 who had the memories embedded. First, they couldn’t see the potential of a snowman. 1 en visioned three round balls of snow, topped off with a hat, eyes, nose, mouth, and buttons. They saw dumping snow in a pile and began smashing it when it was only five inches off the ground. Secondly, they couldn’t create this masterpiece alone. They needed help. They needed my instruction. They needed our tools. My wife gave them plastic bowls to scoop up snow. Even with these, 1 had to help them gather enough in their bowls to make the five-step trip worth while. Thirdly, they hindered the work. Perhaps, 1 should say, they didn’t help much. As 1 be gan putting cereal Oreo buttons Rev. R.O. “Buddy” Denton, Jr. Be Still on, my grandson began eating them. Thankfully (and thought fully), my wife gave enough for the loss. What was 1 thinking, when 1 imagined making a three to four- foot snowman in 10 minutes! 1 had planned a teaching Session on how to make a large snowman and what 1 got was a 2-foot midget. Though 1 wasn’t real impressed, they seemed sat isfied with the Oreo buttons, the apple mouth, carrot nose, olive eyes, and red bowl hat. Not what 1 had hoped, but it was the best 1 could do un der the circumstances. As 1 pondered the experience, 1 thought of God trying to create a masterpiece out of us. He sees potential we can’t see. He is try ing to mold and shape us into His likeness. Unfortunately, we often hinder Him as He works in our life. We want to build it ourselves. We act as if we don’t need His help. We smash what He is doing. We eat what we shouldn’t. When we don’t coop erate, the finished product isn’t pretty. Yet, it isn’t God’s fault. If we would just allow Him to teach us, mold us and make us. If we would listen to Him. Then, we will reach our full potential. He knows what He is doing. His Word is true. Why resist His work? 1 love the picture of my grand children beside the snowman. We made wonderful memories, even with the hindrances. The snowman was only half their size, but they were pleased. However, it wasn’t what 1 had planned. 1 wanted much more. Is this how we treat God’s work in us? Are we satisfied with where we are? God desires to make a mas terpiece in all of us. May we see the potential, co-operate with His work, and stop hindering the process through disobedi ence or selfishness. When we work with God, He will present an awesome Snowman for the world to see. The Rev. R.O. “Buddy" Denton Jr. is Pastor of Askewville As sembly of God Church. He can be reached via email at sodenton® coastalnet.com. God loves lemon blossoms! This week 1 had the occasion to assist in the set up of a ladies event at my church. The tables were decorated beautifully with seasonal Hydrangia and the ar ray of lavender to blue that these seasonal florals bring. Each place had appropriate colors of tableware along with a few pieces of information perti nent to the gathering. A special beverage service was available with a choice of lemon-lime infused water or strawberry infused mango tea. In the center of the table was a cake pedestal with a scrump tious finger dessert called a Lemon Blossom. This dessert seemed to be the hit at the onset and especially at the end of the meal as it adjusted the pallet after an array of cas serole choices for the meal. We all seem to enjoy a sweet taste in the mouth no matter how “full” we are at the end of the meal. It caused me to think of the words of the Psalmist in Psalms 133:1. He says, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s peo ple live together in unity.” The Psalmist uses a couple of adjec tives to describe how he feels when people lay down differ ences and focus on the love we share in Christ. In this verse he uses the word “pleasant,” which denotes a Pastor Wallace Phillips This is the Day THE ILLUSTRATED BIBLE .„Jhey led him away to crucify him.
