Two incidents
lead to drug
arrests

WINDSOR - Two people
were charged with drug
violations following traf
fic stops Feb. 10.
Windsor Police Chief
Todd Lane said the first
incident occurred at
approximately 6 p.m.
when Cpl. Jason Thom
as was patrolling on Gh
ent Street. Cpl. Thom
as observed a Dodge
truck, which displayed
revoked registration
plates.
“Cpl. Thomas could
smell a strong odor of
marijuana coming from
the vehicle, and Mr.
(Justin) Dunlow admit
ted to being in posses
sion of marijuana and
cocaine,” Chief Lane
said.
A search of the ve
hicle led officers to
finding both controlled
substances, as well as
paraphernalia to manu
facture the cocaine into
crack.

Wesson finds his way back to Bertie

T his always has been home to me.
This is how Ronald Wesson describes
how he feels about Bertie County, even
during his years of travels and adven
tures.
Wesson was born to Leon Wesson and Nellie
Ward Wesson, and was reared in Bertie Coun
ty-
He said both sides of his family were
natives of Bertie County.
“My mother is 93 years old. She
still drives and attends events
across the county,” He said.
Wesson lived in Bertie County
and attended county schools as
a child, until his family moved to
Tarboro due his father’s being in
the military. They later returned to
Bertie County, where Wesson fin
ished high school.
“We were a unique class because
we were the only class to spend all
four years at Southwestern High
School,” he added.
After graduating from high
school. Wesson attended the Uni
versity of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill on a baseball scholarship.
“My original plan was to play base
ball for North Carolina State Univer
sity but, after talking with someone ^
from UNC, 1 decided to attend there,” I
said Wesson. l
Wesson says going to Chapel Hill was
a culture shock.
“1 had never been to Chapel Hill until
my letter of intent to play baseball was
signed. It was different in a lot of ways. I
was from a small town and it was a cul-

church leader died af
ter being struck by a
vehicle.
William Spencer Love-
grove, 67, of Roxobel
was killed last Thursday
when the bicycle he was
riding was struck by a
vehicle on NC 308.
Lovegrove was a na
tive of Rich Square.
According to the ac
cident report by North
Carolina Highway Patrol
Trooper J.V. Reid, Love-
grove was traveling
eastbound on NC 308
around 3:15 p.m., just
inside the town limits of
Roxobel.
Hugh Battle, 62, of
Kelford was also travel
ing east on N.C. 308 in a
2017 Nissan passenger
car.
“The investigation
revealed that Battle
pulled out to pass an
other eastbound vehicle
and in the process of re
entering the eastbound
lane he (Battle) lost
control of his vehicle,”
said Reid.

WINDSOR - It didn’t take long for
two races to develop in May’s
Democratic Primary.
Filing opened Monday, and
within hours there were two
candidates each for Bertie Coun
ty Sheriff and for Bertie County
Commissioner in District 2.
Incumbent Sheriff John Holley
was the first person to file for of
fice as he filled out paperwork
to seek his third term in office.
He will be opposed by retired
N.C. Highway Patrol officer Adri
an Bowen, who also filed as a
Democrat.
Incumbent Bertie Commis
sioner Stewart White is not affili
ated with a party, but two Demo
crats have filed for the seat he
currently holds.
Longtime ABC Board member
and community leader Michael
Freeman filed for the post. He
also resigned his seat on the
Bertie County Board of Elec
tions earlier this month, making
him eligible to file.
Longtime Bertie County Sher
iff Greg Atkins also filed to seek
a the District 2 seat on the Board
of Commissioners.
White has made no public
statement about his plans con
cerning re-election.
