WPD confiscates cocaine, heroin

WINDSOR - A Lewiston
Woodville man was arrested
on drug trafficking charges
following a driver’s license
check here Feb. 22.
Windsor Police Chief Todd
Lane said Cpl. Frank Ratzlaff
and Officer Jessie Mizelle
were conducting a driver’s
license check on Granville
Street at approximately 10:15
p.m. last Thursday.
While the officers were
working at the checkpoint,
they reportedly observed a
vehicle make a sudden turn
into a driveway, and stopped
the driver before he was able
to re-enter the roadway.
“As the officers ap
proached the vehicle, they
observed the driver stuffing
something behind the right-
side passenger seat,” Chief
Lane said.
Officer Mizelle asked the
driver - later identified as
Donnell Lee Jr. - for his op
erator’s license.
“During the exchange. Of
ficer Mizelle observed the
driver appeared to be very
nervous,” Chief Lane said.
After getting permission,
officers searched Lee and
found a small plastic bag
containing marijuana in his
pants pocket. Cpl. Ratzlaff
then searched the vehicle
where he found 750 dose

here last week.

last Wednesday. While
conducting the opera
tion, two motorcycles
turned off Sterlingworth
onto U.S. 13/17 at a high
rate of speed.
Cpl. Thomas followed
the suspects traveling
south on U.S. 13/17. One
suspect turned off be
fore he got to them, but
he pulled up behind the
other motorcycle.
“Cpl. Thomas was
able to obtain a radar
clock on the motorcycle
of 90 miles per hour in a
55-mile per hour zone,”
Chief Lane said. “As the
pursuit reached speeds
of more than 115 miles
per hour, the operator
of the motorcycle be
gan to lose control due
to a flat back tire.”

H e was unassuming, some
times whimsical and even
occasionally quiet.
At first glance, he
could be mistaken for
a common man, be
cause he chose to live his life as
one.
Nearly a dozen years after his
death, however, J. Jasper Ba
zemore remains a giant among
men who paved the way for others in Bertie
County, fought for the poor and left Bertie
County a better place than he found it.
Bazemore, who died in 2006, was a longtime
Bertie County Commissioner, who became the
first black person to serve as chairman of
the board. He was first elected in 1994,
and was re-elected by the people of
Bertie County four time, including
just days before his death.
“Mr. Bazemore completely under
stood the role of being a public
servant. He served his country,
his church and his county
extremely well, and in do
ing so, set an example we
all should follow,” longtime
fellow Commissioner Rick Harrell said upon

County YMCA recently
received a grant for new
fitness equipment.
Perdue Farms pre
sented a $5,000 Franklin
P. and Arthur W. Perdue
Foundation grant to the
Bertie County YMCA,
Inc.
The funds were given
to help purchase new
fitness equipment for
the facility.
The Perdue Founda
tion is the charitable
giving arm of Perdue
Farms.
“We are very appre
ciative for the support
from Perdue Farms and
its foundation. The Ber
tie County YMCA is the
only fitness center in
the county. The funding
allows us to continue to
serve the members of
the community and pro
vide up-to-date equip
ment as they strive to
better themselves and
live a more active life
style,” said Bertie Coun
ty YMCA Director Casey
Owens.
The Bertie County
YMCA is a non profit
organization that has
been serving the com
munity for 27 years.
It is one of the small
est YMCA facilities in
the country.
