The motorcycle reportedly ran off the road to
thQ right and wrecked, but the operator - later
identified as Barnes - was able to jump from the
vehicle and flee the scene with Cpl. Thomas giving
chase on foot.
Cpl. Thomas was able to locate Barnes and take
him into custody without further incident.
Barnes with felony speeding to elude arrest, fail
ure to heed blue lights and siren, reckless driving
and driving while license revoked. He was placed
under a $10,000 secured bond and confined to
Bertie-Martin Regional Jail. The motorcycle was
also seized.
Lane said it was Barnes’ second offense for fail
ure to heed blue lights and siren as he was also
charged in March 2015 with the same offense.
“These are the type of incidents which put every
motorist on the highway at risk,” Chief Lane said.
“High speed chases are dangerous and, in most
cases, do not end in a positive manner.
“Cpl. Thomas did an excellent job remaining
calm and driving in a safe manner,” he added. “He
is to be commended for his actions.”
