WINDSOR - Two men face
drug-related charges follow
ing separate incidents.
Windsor Police Chief Todd
Lane said officers charged
the two individuals follow
ing traffic stops on Feb. 23
and Feb. 25.
On Feb. 23, Windsor Po
lice Cpl. Jason Thomas and
Officer Chris Leggett were
conducting a driver’s license
check on U.S. 13 near Edge-
wood Cemetery.
While participating in the
checkpoint, the two officers
witnessed a car come to a
sudden stop in the roadway.
Cpl. Thomas approached
the car and found a female
driver along with a male pas
senger. Cpl. Thomas report
edly noticed a strong odor
of marijuana, and had the
driver pull the vehicle over
for further investigation.
The passenger - identi
fied as Ervin Leroy Smith
Jr., 42, of Kelford - said they
stopped in the road because
he had an open bottle of li
quor, and indicated the smell
of marijuana was from previ
ous use.
While the investigation
was ongoing. Officer Leggett
went to the location where
the car originally stopped
and found a glass jar contain
ing nine bags of marijuana.

WINDSOR - All threats
are being taken seri
ously.
And, arrests have
been and will continue
to be made.
Bertie County Sher
iff John Holley made
those points among
others Monday night
when he addressed the
Bertie County Commis
sioners about a situa
tion which has become
too commonplace -
bomb threats and other
threats of violence.
“Just because we are
in a rural area doesn’t
mean it won’t happen
here,” Sheriff Holley
said. “We have pre
pared, and we continue
to train. We take every
one of them seriously.”
Sheriff Holley said a
bomb threat was made
against Bertie Middle
School on Jan. 12, and
his officers responded.
He said two female ju
veniles were charged
in the incident, and the
case has been adjudi-
H elping others on her journey through
life.
That is the goal and passion of
the first female Powellsville Com
missioner, Hattie Askew.
She was born to the late David Murdock and
Ruth Gantt, and reared in Hampton County,
S.C.
According to Askew, that area is
known as the low country of the rl
state.
“1 was raised in the small town of ,. ^
Molly S.C. It was what they called
sawmill and people would come
to the town just to get jobs at
the sawmill. It was similar to
how people would migrate to ,
gold mining towns,” she said.
Askew was one of many chil
dren in a blended family, but
she was her mother’s only
daughter.
She attended schools dur
ing the time of segregation,
and she remembers it being a
time where people said things
were equal but separate.
“I remember riding the school
buses and waiting in a different
place than the white children. Wait
ing for the bus was never easy. We
didn’t always have new books. Most of
them were secondhand,” said Askew.
“I remember not being able to go in
the front door of a restaurant. We would
have to go to the side of the building
to order. If someone white went inside
to order, then I would have to wait until
