Windsor Police Lt. Justin Jackson said two officers responded to S&K Logging on South King Street after an employee reported his personal vehicle had been stolen. Windsor Cpl. Frank Rat- zlaff and Officer Jessie Miz- elle responded to the call, and were informed by cen tral dispatch the owner had found his vehicle at Duck Thru No. 6 near the intersec tion of South King Street and Cooper Hill Road. Cpl. Ratzlaff reported to Duck Thru, and found a ve hicle which matched the one reported stolen. He went into the Duck Thru to review video footage where he saw a male suspect get out of the stolen vehicle. The description of the sus pect was relayed to Mizelle, who was searching for him. While reviewing the foot age, Cpl. Ratzlaff noticed the suspect leave the Duck Thru property and cross South King St. toward Cooper Hill Rd. Shortly thereafter, the board went to work electing new officers and setting a date to hear a candidate resi dency challenge. The board should have been appointed in July of last year, but a lengthy court battle be tween Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper and Repub licans in the state leg islature led to a delay. While the matter is still in court. Gov. Cooper said late last month he had decided to appoint a state elections board, who in turn appoints the local board. The Bertie County Re publican Party nominat- See ELECTIDN, A6 Accident blocks U.S. 17 traffic LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie iedger-Advance MERRY HILL - An overturned 18-wheeler caused traffic prob lems when it blocked both lanes of U.S. 17 last week. According to Midway-Merry Hill Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jodey Sary, a call was re ceived around 7:15 p.m. regard ing a vehicle accident on U.S. 17 in front of Quality Gas. The accident scene was less than one mile north of the U.S. In this edition 17/N.C. 45 intersection at Mid way. “Upon the arrival of the fire department units, they saw an 18-wheeler tractor trailer over turned in the southbound lane of U.S. 17, blocking traffic in both lanes,” said Sary. “The trailer, based out of Flor ida, contained metal racks used for transporting a large volume of plants and flowers. The driver was Latino and spoke very little English,” he added. According to Sary, a Hispanic family stopped at the scene and was able to translate. “Through the translator we learned that the driver said sun light at sunset got in his eyes, temporarily blinding him. He swerved back onto the roadway, causing the vehicle to flip on its side,” he said. A heavy wrecker was sum moned to the accident scene to remove the overturned big rig.
