A2 I APRIL 11,2018 Community BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Obituaries Gertrude Grotz Conner AULANDER - Gertrude Grotz Conner, age 84, passed away on April 4, 2018 at the Ahoskie House of 2\hoskie, NC. Mrs.Conner was bom in Teisnach, Germany, on January 6, 1934, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Grotz. Gertrude worked as a medical secre tary for Roanoke Chowan Hospital, for many years until her retirement in 1993. Of her many hobbies, her favorite was knitting and she always had such a strong appreciation for her friends. Gertrude was a faithful member of Aulander Baptist Church and eagerly volunteered in all church functiorrs. Besides her parents, Gertrude was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Left to cherish her memory are her two daugh ters, Judith Ann Cormer Duke and husband, Rich ard and Shirley Conner White and husband, Thom as of Aulander, NC; her son, Randor Cormer Jr. and wife, Sheila of Newport News, VA; two grand sons, Richard Cormer, USMC, Fort Leonard Wood, MO and wife, Jennifer, Justin Cormer and special friend, Shelby of Williamsburg, VA; a granddaugh ter, Elana McFal and husband, Devon of Htnesville, GA; and a sister, Maria of Dortmund, Germany. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Louetta Thigpen of BeulaviUe, NC; a great grandson, Richard Con ner, Jr.; a great granddaughter, Emmalyne Cormer; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at 2:00 pm at the Aulander Baptist Church, Aulander, NC, with Rev. Jimmy Blythe, officiating. The family wiU receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church from 1:00 pm until 1:45 pm prior to services. Centurylink* Cecil Gordon Alston AHOSKIE - Cecil Gordon Alston, 71, of Ahoskie, passed away Monday, April 9,2018 in Ids home. Mr. Alston was bom in Hertford Coimty on Feb- maiy 19, 1947, and w'^as the son of the late Grover Cleveland “G.C.” and Millie Hughes Alston. A re tired tobacco farmer, more recently he had been employed with Rerce Leaf Company. He was a member of both St. John Baptist Church and Beechwood Country Club. In addition to his par ents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Steve Alston. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Marian Daniels Alston; two sons, Gordon Cecil Alston and wife Becky, and AUen Daniel Alston; a grandson, Dylan Cecil Alston, all of Ahoskie; and by a special cousin who was more like a sister, Sharon Frances Phelps and husband Ronnie of Coiryock. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Beechwood Country Club, and will be conducted by Pastor Raymond Faircloth, Jr. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation in the country club immediately following the ser vice on Wednesday evening. Paid Obituary James Luther Mizelle WINDSOR - James Luther Mizelle 86, of 136 R C Road, died Sunday April 8, 2018 at Vidant Bertie Memorial Hospital. He was bom in Bertie County June 2, 1931 to the late Tommie Luther and Armie Alice MTiite Mizelle and was predeceased by three brothers, Elwood, Charles and T. J. Mizelle; sisters, Mary Deans CasteUow and Alice Harrison. Funeral services will be held Tuesday April, 10, 2018 at 3:00 PM at the Walker Funeral Home Chap el by Rev. J. N Baggett. A private burial will follow. Survivors include his wife, Nolecka Morris Mizelle of the home; sisters, Annie Sue Dunlow and Lois Rerce of Windsor, Carol Jean. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers. April 16 Blood Pressure Management Program The Bertie County Public Library will host a four-month high blood pressure program called “Know It, Control It” at 11 a.m., every Monday starting Monday, April 16. Par ticipants must be at least 18 years old, have been diag nosed with high blood pressure, have a normal heartbeat and not had a heart attack or stroke in the last six months.
