Dem ocrats chose Glenwood F. Mitchell and James Lee as their nominees. Longtime Democratic board member Michael Freeman resigned ear lier this year when he filed to run for Bertie County Commissioner. The board began work by going over meeting schedules and election calendars, as well as providing the two new members with information about the duties of Elections Di rector Shelia Holloman and budgetary informa tion. Woodard, who was the chair of the meet ing, said the board must set a date to hear a challenge to the resi dency of Adrian Bowen, a candidate for sheriff of Bertie County. Vivian Clark and Chavuletta Jones-Sex- ton, both residents of Arrests two counts of possession with intent to sell and deliver co caine and two counts of main taining a vehicle to keep/store a controlled substance. Woodard said since there was no local board, or state board. the petitioners had filed a court proceed ing, but courts referred the matter back to the local elections board once it was seated. “The state wants us to hear this matter as soon as possible,” Woo dard said. Board members asked about residency requirements and brief ly discussed what in formation they needed. Holloman said she had with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Dunlow was confined to the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail un der a $70,000 secured bond. “The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics and Gang Unit, along with the Down East Drug Task Force, are dedicated to our mission of getting violent offenders and drug dealers off the streets of Bertie County,” Sheriff Holley said. “Our goal is to be strategic, methodical and precise in our investigation of not only those who sell ille gal dangerous drugs in Bertie County, but also of the distribu tors that may be in Northamp ton, Hertford and other areas.” Those with information about the sale of illegal drugs can call the Bertie County Sheriff’s Of fice at 252-794-5330. They agreed unani mously to hear the complaint today (Wednesday), but due Theft to unforseen conflicts, changed it to occur at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17. Once the business was completed, the board members offi cially took their oath of office and began the process of electing of ficers. Woodard said the new state legislation calls for a Democrat to serve as chairman in even years, and a Re publican in odd years. She said one of the two new members would have to serve as chair man. Lee said he would de fer to Mitchell, and he nominated the latter to serve. Mitchell said he would do it to the best of his ability. Woodard called for a vote and it was unanimous. Ratzlaff ap proached the suspect and began questioning him, at which point he noticed several incon sistencies in his story,” Lt. Jackson said. The suspect - identi fied as Robert Shane Whitaker of 105 North Pearl St. in Williamston - was charged with lar ceny of a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He was placed in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a $10,000 se cured bond. Whitaker will make his first appearance in Bertie County District Court today (Wednes day). “Cpl. Ratzlaff and Of ficer Mizelle did a good job on this case,” Lt. Jackson said. “They went the extra mile by watching all the video footage and getting a good description of the suspect, as well as checking the surround ing area well and not giving up on the search. Accident partment left the scene shortly before mid night. Also responding were Bertie County EMS, the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina Highway Pa trol.
