WINDSOR - Adrian Bo
wen reiterated his plans
to appeal a ruling which
effectively removed him
from the race for Ber
tie County Sheriff last
week.
In an interview with
the Bertie Ledger-Ad
vance, Bowen said he
planned to file his for
mal appeal to the N.C.
Board of Elections and
Ethics Enforcement.
Last week, a 3-1 vote
of the Bertie County
Board of Elections up
held a challenge by
Vivian Clark, a citizen
of Bertie County. Clark
challenged whether or
not Bowen was a resi
dent of Bertie County.
State law requires a
challenged candidate
to prove his or her
residency. Bowen pre
sented more than 100
documents and then
answered questions un

spending a long time
behind bars.
Last Thursday, Lemar-
shall Lorenzo Figgs, 41,
pleaded guilty to failing
to report a new address
as a registered sex of

Judge Quentin Sum

to 87-117 months in
the N.C. Department
of Corrections, which
equates to 7.25 to 9.75
years in state prison.
Figgs was represented
by attorney Tom Bran

“1 am committed to
holding sex offend

minimal requirements
of the Sex Offender
Registry,” District At
torney Valerie Asbell
said. “They committed
the crime that landed
them on the • Registry,
and under my watch,
they will comply with
the conditions or face
prison.
“1 am also commit
ted to holding habitual
felons accountable for
their lengthy felony re
cords,” she added. “Mr.
Figgs continued to com
mit felonies after he
was initially convicted
of the sex crime of tak
ing indecent liberties
with a child; therefore,
his status as an habit
ual felon enhanced his
sentence.”
