Windsor Police Depart ment Lt. Justin Jackson said officers were called to Bertie Correctional at approximate ly 5:30 p.m. last Thursday. Windsor Police Officer Chris Leggett went to the scene and was told the offi cer had been transported to Vidant Bertie Hospital. Officer Leggett went to the hospital where he inter viewed Corrections Officer Joshua Barbour. Lt. Jackson reported Bar bour said he was working on the unit, “and the next thing he knew he woke up in the hospital.” Barbour was not able to give officers a mo tive. Witnesses interviewed at the prison said the inmate walked over to Barbour and began hitting him, striking him in the face and head. Despite being unconscious, Barbour received no serious injuries. “We take any assault on a corrections officer seriously. See ASSAULT, A3 Bowen to file motion THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Adrian Bo wen will seek a court injunction barring the certification of the May 8 election results in Ber tie County. Bowen, who filed as a Democratic candidate for sheriff, was declared an ineligible candidate by the Bertie County Board of Elections fol lowing a hearing last month. The board found Bowen had not proved he was a resident of Bertie County by a 3-1 vote. Bowen filed an appeal with the State Board of Elections last week, but will request the injunc tion in case the appeal isn’t heard before the May 8 primary, accord ing to his attorney. Attorney Brad Hill of Hill Law, PLLC in Ra leigh, said Bowen filed his appeal of the local board ruling, but the State Board is currently awaiting a transcript of the hearing held in Windsor. “They are waiting for a transcript of the hear ing, and 1 suspect that won’t occur until next week,” Hill said. Lawrence Academy’s Kin dergarten class presented “The Little Mermaid” on Thursday night (April 26) and Friday morning (April 27) in the gymnasium. The play was led by teacher Pam White and her assistant, Amy Smith, along with key boardist Scott Bradshaw. The play lasted just over an hour and was narrated by two Lawrence Academy seniors. Children and students can participate in Ber tie County’s fundraising event to fight cancer by signing up for the Kids Walk, which is sched uled on Friday, May 18 in the midst of Relay For Life. The Kids Walk is open to all children and stu dents, but a parent or guardian must accom pany them for the Relay event. Those children are requested to fill out a registration form either online or by hand and pay a $5 registration fee, which covers the T- Shirt they are given for participating. Registering online can be done by going to www.relayforlife.org/ bertienc and filling out the registration by join ing the Kids Walk Team. Citizens in Bertie County will have the opportunity to pay hon or and respect to the memory of those who gave the ultimate sac rifice for their freedom at a ceremony planned at 11 a.m. Monday, May 28 at the Bertie County Courthouse Square. The ceremony will feature a variety of pa triotic music, a guest speaker and a tribute to Memorial Day. The event is being organized by the Bertie Ledger-Advance and the Windsor/Bertie Cham ber of Commerce in conjunction with Ber tie County, the town of Windsor and the Bertie High School JROTC. “Bertie County is the heartland of our coun try, and our people have fought and died to keep us free.
